Not since the 1970's has demand for diesel engines and cars equipped with such been so high. This demand has caused all automakers and GM specifically, to reevaluate the use of diesel engines in their cars, SUV’s and trucks. Unlike in the 70's, automakers are not just putting the diesel engines into vehicles and shipping them to market, but are offering them as an option on several lines.

It reflects the changing market for vehicles, with consumers demanding more fuel-efficient choices and options. By taking the option route, General Motors also avoids the problem they had in the 70's of overselling diesel engines when the technology was still not mature for the smaller auto. Things like excessive motor vibrations, loud engine noise and malfunctions of converted parts have all been eliminated. Combined with General Motors transmission technology the longevity of the drive train of the diesel now exceeds that of gas powered engines, depending on use.

Beyond efficiency and maintenance, another reason for more diesel engine options is the wider adoption of biodiesel. More and more consumers are coming to understand the benefits of biodiesel and the advantages in not only cost but in the environmental savings. Biodiesel offers many advantages over that of a hybrid or electric as the diesel has a longer range and capacity than either the hybrid or electric will still maintaining a decent power ratio. This gives the consumer a green option while still providing for power needs. This is especially true in SUV style units or units that tend to be larger requiring more power such as the Buick line of autos.
