Summer Work Become Insufficient For Youth
With joblessness at the elevated it is at present at, balanced over 9%, it looks like all those teens who have just ended the school year are having a pretty hard time seeking work.
Because there are a lot of adults currently in search of work, many are taking anything they can find, as well as those jobs regularly reserved for out of school teens.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics had a current survey that tracked a deterioration in the level of youth that are participating in the job marketplace this year versus last year; its down 3%.
So with the lack of positions, what are teens doing? Well, it seems like theyre forgoing the paying jobs to volunteer and do other non-paying jobs throughout the summer, if for nothing else, solely to get out of the house for a few hours per day.
Some teens are even becoming business owners in their own right. Some have taken benefit of the time of year and begun forming their own businesses for the summer, such as lawn maintenance or swimming pool cleaning. The greatest part of these teens beginning these jobs on their own is that they can make use of their friends ...
... and usually make more than minimum wage at what time there is work.
Right now the unemployment rate for 16 to 19 year old range is 21.5%, thats up from 15.4% in 2008. When you look at those numbers, you need to keep in mind that only includes the teens that are actually actively seeking employment, not those which arent.
I know that it is still hard to find work. Living in a university town, there are continuously college students in the hunt for work, append on top of that out of school youth, then the information that none of the businesses do the same total of business over the summer as they do throughout a semester and its essentially a formula for excessive unemployment. There are a few restaurants looking for employees, but its all just part time work and the hours are inadequate at best.
Subsequently, there are just a lot of adults that have families to feed that are seeking work at the same locations. If I were a manager at one of the locations where teens typically go to discover work, then I would be much more likely to employ the man or woman who needs to feed their family before I employed a 16 year old who just needs to put some minutes on their pay-as-you-go phone.
