What a fascinating topic. It seems as though we're just beginning to realise the potential of hypnosis, although it's been used for hundreds of years. What follows is a brief overview of hypnosis down the years, and you might find yourself a little surprised by some of its applications.
In 1841 James Braid created the term Hypnosis, before that it had been known as Mesmerism. The reason Braid choose to change the name was because of a new understanding of the way hypnosis really works. Users of Mesmerism believed that it was down to some unique knowledge or power they held and practised, which induced the state of mesmerism. James Braid made the discovery that the Hypnotist didn't hold any magical ability, but instead the state happened because of that which was going on inside the subject's thoughts.
Among the first known people to promote auto-suggestion was Mr Emile Coue. The work he did compounded the findings of Dr Braid in the years before him. The model of hypnosis being a self controlled frame of mind, rather than one reliant on the all powerful hypnotist was now becoming popular. The result was that people ...
... could now learn how to harness this power to improve themselves.
Professor Sigmond Freud began working with hypnosis to supplement his method of psychoanalysis coming to the latter part of the 19th century, but disregarded it as having little value. It was reported that, toward the end of his career reported that he wouldn't have stopped using hypnotherapy, had he understood and known known as much about it earlier in his career.
In the 50's Doctor Milton Erickson created a different style of hypnosis. This approach began to move away from the more classical approaches, and earned the name indirect hypnosis. Hypnotising clients who previously couldn't be hypnotised started to become a speciality of Doctor Milton Ericksons.
Stage hypnotist Dave Elman, was a huge contributor to hypnosis around the same time, used a much more direct method compared to Psychologist Milton Erickson. Elman was famous for some of the fast and powerful solutions, a lot of which are commonly used today. He was perhaps most famous for teaching dentists and doctors about the value of hypnosis for anaesthesia, his methods are effectively used to this day for pain-free childbirth and hypno-analysis.
The author of 'The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis' was Ormond McGill, also known as 'The Dean'. McGill was very well known for his excellent therapeutic work. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. Ormond passed away in 2005.
Gil Boyne 2014-2010, a pioneer of Transforming Therapy, which utilises previous findings made by Dr Erickson and Elman, and has been a massive influence on analytical therapy all around the world. Boyne was a student of Elman and Erickson's methods, and expanded on them to shape a modern method of therapy. Many have said that Gil was the unsung hero of modern rapid hypnotheraputic techniques.
The world today has so many inspiring therapists in the hypnosis field, way too many to mention in this article. Nowadays the internet has given rise to a communal increase in collaboration among hypnotists.
