Besides that, the homeowner's security concerns are seen reflected in the locking mechanisms he prefers. Similarly, the level of insulation of the external doors shows his environment consciousness, and his interest to save on energy bills. The front door of a home, which is the more important and prominent of its external doors, is the face of it. It is a beauty gauge as well as a barometer of the emotions, economics, financial status, and security concerns of the owner of the home.

Elaborately worked external doors have been, through all ages, symbols of the wealth of those who own the building. Frescoed doors, hand sculpted doors, and doors filigreed with delicate patterns of gold and silver, of ancient times, are preserved all over the world. External doors of medieval churches in the gothic pattern were immense in size, heavily ornamental all over, had statues on the doorjamb, traceries on the arches above the doors, and intricately sculpted door tympanums, all of which speak volumes about the wealth of the owners who commissioned the work.

If these external doors were symbols ...
... of the owner's wealth, they were symbols of their dedication to arts as well. They were obviously people who maintained exacting aesthetic standards and did not see doors, or for that matter other necessities of life as mere utility items but saw everything surrounding them as extensions of beauty and art, and fit receptacles for craftsmanship to find fruition.

The tradition continues to the present day and larger and more elaborate doors that reflect the wealth and artistic interests of owners are still seen in some larger public buildings. However, aesthetic interests will work beautifully even without wealth. The external doors of simple village homes are often decorated with marigolds, mango leaves, mistletoes, or whatever the locally available beautifying agents are. These doors are the badges of their owners dedication to beauty.

The security concerns of homeowners also come alive through their external doors. Different doors come with various security features like multipoint locking system, double locking locks, claw locks, hook bolts, spy holes, extra bolts at top or bottom, or provisions for using padlocks. Some of these are built into standard doors, while others are generally added on request of the customers. These security features, in their own way, portray the mindset of the owner. For example, those homeowners who opt for spy holes on their doors are bound to be cautious people. Those who are obsessed with the security will have stronger and more locking provisions on their external doors.

Increasing security concerns of the present day have led to the fixing of password protected electronic locking mechanisms on external doors. These are designed to let in only those who can provide the password by swiping the card. These are rarely used in individual homes and are mostly used by companies to identify their employees. In places where they are used on external doors, it is proof that the owner of the company gives a lot of importance to the security of the place.

Another attribute of external doors that becomes the gauge of the owner's nature is its insulation level. Well-insulated external doors are proof of the fact that the owner is an environment conscious person who does not like to waste energy, and prudent enough to save on energy bills.
