Osteoporosis is a progressive disorder that results in the decrease of bone mass and density which increases the risk of fracture. In this disorder, the bone mineral density or BMD is reduced causing the micro architecture to deteriorate and be susceptible to fractures. Once you are diagnosed with osteoporosis there are certain things that need to be done which is mentioned in this article.

Understanding the Risk Factors:

The reasons for osteoporosis can be either biological or genetics. Most of these risk factors vary from person to person. The following are the risk factors:

• Individuals who are over the age of 50
• Females especially who are going through the menopause stage due to the deficiency of estrogen.
• Individuals who have a thin build
• Excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption
• Low dietary calcium intake
• Lowe levels of vitamin D
• Long term use of certain medications which include corticosteroids, thyroid medications, epilepsy medications.
• Endocrine diseases and thyrotoxicosis
• Rheumatoid disease
• cancer

Treatment:

The ...
... osteoporosis treatment depends on the causes and symptoms of your disorder. There are various ways that osteoporosis treatment can be undertaken. Some of them include:

• Change in lifestyle habits: your food intake will change. You will have to consume food that is high in calcium and iron. Food items like dairy products, dark green vegetables, beans, legumes, fish especially sardines or salmon, eggs, liver, soybean products, cereals and nuts. At least 1000mg of calcium should be taken on a daily basis. You will have to begin an exercise routine that will help you in bone formation and reduce bone loss. At least 30 minutes of exercise is needed on a daily basis to ensure that your body is healthy. Reduce habits like alcohol and cigarette consumption is a must. Drinks which contain a high level of cola and caffeine must be reduced. a regular exposure to sunlight must be made into a habit, especially if it’s the morning sun. at least a minimum of 15 minutes is a must on an everyday basis.

• Medication: one can take calcium and iron rich supplements as prescribed by the doctor. Vitamin D tablets too have been recommended to be taken, to the aid the process of absorption of calcium and minerals in the body. Bishposphonates supplements are also recommended by doctors and are normally consumed in an alternate cycle with calcium supplements as a form of osteoporosis treatment. In extreme cases, a hormone replacement therapy is undertaken for osteoporosis treatment. This, in turn, helps in reducing bone loss. However, this kind of treatment should be spaced out over a considerable amount of time with the express supervision of a specialist as have been known to be side effects.
