Temperature And Its Role In Insomnia
July 22, 2014 – Out of the many forms of sleep disorders affecting millions of people across the globe, insomnia remains to be the most common. In the United States alone, insomnia, or persistent sleeplessness or difficulty in staying asleep despite having more than enough opportunities to do so, affects around 65% of the adult population. Stress, trauma, depression, medications, and hormonal fluctuations and imbalance, particularly in women, especially during menstruation and menopause, are the cited as the most common causes of insomnia. Not surprisingly, it turns out that temperature, too, plays a major role in insomnia, especially among women.
High temperatures of either the room or the body, or both, especially during bedtime, can cause a lot of discomfort, making it even more difficult for insomniacs to fall asleep. In some cases, the patients may fall asleep initially, but then the uncomfortable temperature will disrupt it, leading to sleeplessness. A person will only feel drowsy and start falling asleep once his or her body temperature goes down. The room temperature should be kept in the ideal cool average ...
... of 65 degree Fahrenheit.
The same is true for cold temperatures. If the room is too cold, sleep won’t be forthcoming, either, since the body will be too busy trying to maintain and protect its core temperature.
According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 10% of the US adult population suffers from chronic insomnia, which occurs at least three nights in a week for a period of at least three months. It affects one’s lifestyle and even their work performance and overall productivity. In fact, the America Insomnia Survey conducted in 2011 by a team led by Ronald Kessler, PhD, revealed that insomnia causes an estimated $63.2 billion loss in work performance per year.
These alarming figures are enough to encourage experts to look into effective solutions for insomnia. Behavioral therapies and sleep medications are recommended, but since they are quite expensive, cheaper alternatives are being sought.
A cool gel pillow can be an effective relief source for people suffering from insomnia, and among the many cooling pillows available in the market today, PolarGel Pillow, which is now available on Amazon, stands out for its use of the latest cooling gel technology, coupled with a large-sized and seamless design that makes it easy to use. It regulates body temperature by dispersing heat throughout the pillow, dispensing with the need to look for cool spots, as the gel remains lower than the room temperature.
