Such an interesting topic. It appears we're only just starting to understand the potential of hypnosis, but it's been around for hundreds of years. The following is a quick overview of hypnosis down through the years, and you may be a little surprised with a few of its uses.
Hypnosis as a term was introduced by James Braid in 1841, but before that was called Mesmerism. The reason Braid felt compelled to change the name was due to a new understanding of how hypnosis works. Practitioners of Mesmerism were led to believe in some special knowledge, and that for this reason, people entered the special state. Braid realised that the Hypnotist didn't hold any special power, but rather the trance happened by what was happening in the subject's mind.
Among the earliest known people to work on auto-suggestion was a man called Emile Coue. This work he did complimented the findings of Braid in previous years. The face of hypnosis was changing as people now began to regard hypnosis through the eyes of a participant, instead of one under the power of the hypnotist.
Respected Doctor of psychology Professor Sigmond Freud famously ...
... rejected hypnosis as useless for analysis. Subsequent to this rejection of hypnosis, lots of psychologists avoided developing it. His opinion radically changed on hypnosis as he saw other peoples work with it, unfortunately his negative comments on hypnosis had a larger impact in the thoughts of people who were influenced by him. It is thanks to the stage performers carrying on the use of hypnosis, that the art is still around today.
A new approach of hypnotherapy Psychologist Milton Erickson circa the 50's. Therapists called his method indirect hypnosis, it was very different from the methods used previously. Helping patients who previously couldn't be hypnotised became a speciality of Doctor Milton Ericksons.
A revolution in hypnotherapy was being taught to those in the medical profession during the same period by Dave Elman. Dave Elman taught a very direct method of hypnosis which was mostly used for pain control and hypno-analysis. His rapid hypnotic methods are currently used by practitioners today.
Ormond McGill, was known as "The Dean, author of "The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis and less well published for his rapid therapy, in which he was excellent. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. Ormond died in 2005.
Gil Boyne 2014-2010, creator of Transforming Therapy, which expands on the work of Elman and Dr Erickson, and forms the roots of a lot of regression therapy in schools today. Boyne was a student of Elman and Erickson's teachings, and use them to shape the regression therapy many use today. Many have said that Gil was this centuries innovator of modern rapid hypnotheraputic techniques.
As we speak, there are so many amazing proponents in the area of hypnosis, way too many to mention in this article. Developments in the internet has resulted in a welcome increase in collaboration among therapists. Because of this there has been progression into the helping of physical problems such as arthritis and I.B.S. in conjunction with the standard interventions, such as stopping smoking and losing weight.
