The Importance Of Fire Safety Trainings
Accidents occurring in fire-related incidents often result in severe burn injuries, which at times can be fatal. Fire can occur anywhere; a residence, workplace, shopping mall, public buildings, or forests and being involved in it can be a shocking experience with distressing and fatal consequences. To meet the exigencies of fire occurrences and reduce the number of fire-related casualties, fire-safety knowledge and training is necessary.
It has been observed that lack of adequate knowledge in fire-safety and absence of fire-safety training among the community is the single most factors responsible for the high number of injuries and fatalities. To overcome this shortcoming, fire-safety training is the only alternative. Fire-safety training imparts fire-safety knowledge to the public and improves their response to any fire, at any place. The aim of the training is making the public aware of the threat perception, evacuation to safety, importance of the community's role, prevention and preparedness to deal with fire and maintaining functional fire-safety equipment. Enhancement of fire-safety knowledge leads to reduction ...
... in the rate of fire-related accidents and casualties.
Research has proved that the general community does not possess adequate level of fire safety knowledge and at times acts dangerously; like leaving cooking unattended or placing flammable material close to the heater; putting them at greater risk. Apart from that response of people in fire emergency is confusing, indecisive and are unable to determine whether to fight or flee. Fire safety training prepares the general public to initiate immediate response in a stressful event of fire and modifies their behavior and decision making ability. A person with sufficient knowledge and training in fire safety displays leadership qualities and takes immediate steps to inform the Fire authorities and people around; takes prompt action to evacuate people from the building, giving priority to the elderly and children; and try to extinguish if the fire is small. This attitude of the public will prevent a lot of injuries and save lives.
The basic features of fire safety training are as follows:
- Fire safety legislation and law in force,
- The causes of fire,
- The chemical processes resulting in fire,
- The effects of fire on different types of buildings,
- Procedures of effective evacuation,
- Preferred reaction of people present in the vicinity of fire,
- Activity in fire protection methods,
- Training in operating different types of fire extinguishers.
Developing the skills in above fire safety measures would enable individuals and general public to accurately assess a typical fire situation and accordingly take appropriate action. It is beneficial in improving fire safe behavior and the community's preparedness to deal proactively and accurately in a given fire situation, resulting in reduced number of fire-related injuries and fatalities. Public educated in fire safety methods can prevent a fire or respond appropriately in case of occurrence.
