Sorafenib Is Used To Treat Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma - Onlinepillmart
Sorafenib is used to treat advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC; a type of cancer that begins in the kidneys). Sorafenib is also used to treat unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (a type of liver cancer that cannot be treated with surgery). Sorafenib is in a class of medications called kinase inhibitors. It works by slowing the spread of cancer cells.
Mechanism of action:
Sorafenib is a type of targeted therapy known as a kinase inhibitor. Kinases are proteins on or near the surface of a cell that transmit important signals to the cell’s control center. Sorafenib blocks several kinase proteins that either prompt tumor cells to grow or help form new blood vessels (angiogenesis) to feed the tumor. By blocking these proteins, it can help to stop the growth of cancer cells.
Side effects:
It may cause serious side effects, including:
• decreased blood flow to the heart and heart attack. Get emergency help if you have chest pain, shortness of breath, feel lightheaded or faint, have nausea or vomiting, or you are sweating a lot.
• bleeding problems. Tell your doctor if you have any ...
... bleeding or easy bruising while taking this drug.
• high blood pressure. Your blood pressure should be checked every week during the first 6 weeks of starting therapy and then regularly, thereafter. If your blood pressure is high, it may need to be treated.
• a skin problem called hand-foot skin reaction. This causes redness, pain, swelling or blisters on the palms of your hands and soles of your feet. Your doctor may change your dose or stop treatment for a while.
• an opening in the wall of your stomach or intestines (perforation of the bowel). Tell your doctor right away if you get high fever, nausea, vomiting or abdominal (stomach) pain.
• wound healing problems. If you have a surgical or dental procedure, tell your doctor you are taking this tablet. Your treatment may be stopped until after your surgery or until your wound heals.
Drug interactions:
This drug may interact with a number of drugs and supplements, which may either raise or lower the level of sorafenib in your blood. The following drugs and supplements can lower the levels of sorafenib in the blood and make it less effective:
• Anti-seizure drugs carbamazepine (Tegretol), phenobarbital (Luminal), and phenytoin (Dilantin)
• TB drugs rifampin, rifapentin (Priftin), and rifabutin (Mycobutin)
• Dexamethasone (Decadron), a steroid drug
• St. John’s wort (herbal dietary supplement)
Contraindications:
You should not use this drug if you are allergic to sorafenib, or if you have squamous cell lung cancer and you are being treated with carboplatin (Paraplatin) and paclitaxel (Onxol, Taxol, Abraxane).
To make sure it is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
• kidney or liver problems other than cancer;
• lung cancer;
• a bleeding or blood clotting disorder such as hemophilia;
• high blood pressure (hypertension), heart disease, slow heartbeats, congestive heart failure, chest pain;
• a personal or family history of Long QT syndrome;
• a history of stroke or heart attack; or
• any allergies.
Storage:
Store at room temperature. Protect from heat, light and moisture. Keep away from reach of children.
