List Of Terrorist Acts Done By Farc
FARC Modus Operandi
Considered to be the Americas’ first established rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has been waging a mixture of conventional and unconventional warfare against the Colombian government since 1964.
Due to the violent and sometimes indiscriminate nature of the attacks attributed to this insurgent group, they have been recognized as a terrorist faction not only by the Colombian government, but also by Canada, the European Union, and the United States.
The list of terrorist acts done by FARC includes kidnappings, use of improvised explosive device (IED), indiscriminate use of gas cylinder bombs, assassinations, hijacking, extortion, and the employment of conventional and guerilla warfare against Colombian police, military, and civilian targets.
Offensives against the military and police forces of Colombia
Among the bloodiest attacks included in the list of terrorist acts done by FARC, the offensives against military and police targets stand out.
During their August 30, 1996 attack against the Las Delicias military base, ...
... a total of 129 casualties were inflicted in the military ranks. This includes 54 dead and 15 wounded while 60 more were taken captive.
The year 1998 saw more attacks carried out by FARC against Colombian military bases and units. In March of that year, the 52nd battalion of the 3rd Mobile Brigade of the Colombian Army suffered 105 casualties out of their 154 personnel when an estimated 700 FARC members staged an ambush against them.
In August of that same year, the military base in Miraflores located in southern Guaviare was destroyed by FARC fighters. Three months after their Miraflores offensive, FARC undertook another raid against the capital of the Mitu department located in the vicinity of the Brazilian border.
The rebels held on to the base for three days before they got ejected out of it when the Colombian reinforcements arrived to join the battle.
Attacks against civilians
Conventional military offensives aren’t the only attacks included in the list of terrorist acts done by FARC. The group also conducted offensives which resulted in massive civilian casualties.
The infamous May 2002 Bojaya massacre undertaken by FARC members took the life of 119 civilians. During June of 2004, another massacre took place, this time at La Gabarra. This attack left 34 peasants dead.
“Paper tigerâ€Â
Despite these attacks and the setbacks suffered by the military, police and civilians of Colombia, the Colombian Vice President announced in 2008 that FARC amounted to little more than a “paper tigerâ€Â.
This statement was prompted by the successful attempts of the Colombian government to reduce the numbers of FARC members, as well as their income. These developments should hopefully reduce, or even totally eliminate the addition of new attacks that could be included in the list of terrorist acts done by FARC.
