If you're looking for a new dog, then rather than eyeing the usual suspects when it comes to a pet, have you ever considered a mini dog breed? A miniature dog breed is, of course, a specially bred version of the standard sizes you can find with the difference being you can get a whole lot more for the same!

It took me a while to come up with the list, but you can read about a few of my favourite dog breeds below. There are, obviously, many miniature dog breeds and each of them make a great addition to your home if you're looking for a new dog as a pet.

Miniature Schnauzer. This 19th Century working dog was at first bred from their larger cousins for work on the farm ratting and herding small animals - the miniature shnauzer shone in both these roles as well as a small guard dog. Over time, farmers began to breed down the standard-sized Schnauzer into a smaller compact size to be worked for the most part for rat hunting duties around about the farm house and sheds.

Miniature Pinscher. Many people automatically make the assumption that the Mini Pinscher is just a small version of a Doberman ...
... Pinscher. They may look like a small version - but they are not. In fact, it’s suggested that the the breed could be older than the Doberman by at least a century. The misunderstanding came about because the Doberman Pinscher came to the United States before the Miniature Pinscher and the American Kennel Club just classified them as the same breed, albeit a smaller version, when the Pinscher turned up. The belief persisted until the early part of the 20th century.

Miniature Dachshund. The Mini Dachshund originated in Germany in the 1500s. The Badgerdog (as Dachshund translates to) were used for hunting small animals - vermin mainly - underground and hence where the name came from. Originally the runt of the litter, Mini Dachshunds were in due course intentionally bred by mixing standard Dachshunds with Terriers and Pinschers.

Miniature English Bulldog. Here's a good way to open a debate (that is STILL raging!). The Mini English Bulldog doesn't exist. There. I said it! Not officially, anyway. The actual officially recognised breed went extinct in the British Isles in the early 1900s due it it being a threat to the traditional English Bulldog. What exists today is an unofficially recognised breed that goes by the name of the Mini English Bulldog and which could have one of two origins.

Miniature Bull Terrier. Due to dog fighting and the need for rat hunting, the Bull and Terrier breeds grew in demand during the 1800s. Based upon the now dying out Old English Bulldog (see above), Old English Terrier and the Manchester Terrier - this new breed of Bulldog and Terriers filled a niche. Breeding them together brought a dog which filled the bloodlust of the sport fans by mixing the ferocity of the bulldog, which was originally bred for Bull Baiting and not suited to dog on dog sport and the speed and agility of the terrier, the Bull Terrier became highly popular.

Miniature Poodle. Sketches exist showing the Poodle in the 15th century Germany. The Regular Poodle is the oldest of all poodle breeds yet it is believed that the Miniature version became widespread soon after.

Now that you have my list of favourite small dog breeds and you can discover more about this topic further at http://animalsandfood.blog.ca/. Small dogs are one of the most lovable, friendly dogs that you can own and so if you are thinking about a new pet, then seriously, go for one of these little fellas.
