There is a trick in cinematography called time-lapse which is used to depict the passing of a long period of time in a movie within a few seconds. Lighting changes from day to night and then day again, and the movement of people and objects are shown as streaks of color and shadow. Before the audience knows it, the main character or setting of the movie has changed or advanced.

Sometimes real life may feel like that movie scene. The pace at which new ideas, new discoveries and progress are encountered these days makes life seem to be on fast forward. The global use of the internet for information further contributes to the quickness of how things spread and how an individual may improve and gain knowledge, in order to keep up with the fast rhythm of life.

In the dental profession, it is sensible for oral health care workers to be aware that the field of dentistry is not spared from this fast changing pace of the world today. Every day there is a chance or an opportunity for someone to discover something new, such as a better dental material or a different technique of performing a dental treatment ...
... or a new disease of the oral cavity. Every day there is a chance for someone to question what once was taught as a golden standard or rule in dentistry or for someone to encounter a problem associated with a basic dental concern. All of these possibilities simply mean one thing – that persons involved in oral health care should remain alert and fresh with information pertaining to the profession.

One of the best ways to do this is to take or participate in dental CPD (Continuing Professional Development). Through this, a dental practitioner receives continuing education that enhances one’s knowledge and understanding of the profession. Seeking further study allows an individual to keep up with the invariable possibility of evolving ideas, methods, beliefs and practices. It allows a dental practitioner to maintain a level of expertise that is at par with what others in the profession and the public would consider as good or even better.

Through dental CPD, a dental practitioner has the means to re-learn basic subjects studied in dental school or to learn new ideas that may not have been encountered before. A dental practitioner that has been in clinical practice for maybe the past 20 years can find the means to stay current and in touch with modern developments through a course of dental CPD and thereby keep his or her competitive edge against upcoming dental practitioners. Many people these days are informed of what is new and current in medicine, especially due to the growth in awareness of health care, therefore a dental practitioner that is also updated may be more appealing to such patients.

Dental CPD among oral health care workers serves to increase the integrity of the profession as a whole. It figures in the fight or competition between individual practitioners to be better than the other, but essentially leads to every member of the oral health care work force becoming better. This can only contribute to the improvement of dental services offered to the public, which in turn may put the whole profession in a better light.

The importance of oral health care workers to participate in dental CPD should not be underestimated. The further growth in knowledge and skill that a dental practitioner may acquire through CPD allows one to stay in constant pace with a relentlessly developing world of medicine that the public has become aware of. This contributes well to how dental practitioners manage a dental clinic and provide treatment to patients, which will reflect upon the individual worker and possibly the profession as a whole.
