Before Christ, i.e., between 4000 and 3000 BCE’s, an evidence of silk was found in a small village in China. A silkworm cocoon was found by Chinese and later the secret was revealed to other countries.

According to Dupion, it is an Indian variety. Karnataka is one of the major producers of this type of synthetic fibre. It is lighter in weight and smoother in cloth.

Dupion Silk is one of the natural and purest ...
... silk with neat look. It is such a beautiful silk woven from two different coloured fabrics gives shimmering effect. The weavers made it as a highly-wrinkle resistant fabric.

Dupion silk has an exclusive irregular pattern with lumps of yarn that lends its uniqueness.
A plain wave crisp type of Dupion fabric is produced by making warping and wefting.

The weaver creates a Silk Dupion with threads from two different silk worms. To make the Silk thread, two worms spin (warp) their cocoons closer and by that the fibre gets tangled up (weft). These tangled fibres together make the silk thread.

But the thread that was formed is rougher than the regular silk. So the weaver dyes it and furnishes it using a sewing machine. Substantial underlining must be used to protect the fabric from sunlight.

The weavers often weave the Dupion with different colours of threads. By this technique, weavers produce the fabric with rainbow like colours.

Different varities such as sarees, salwar kameez, curtains, bed sheets and other drapes are also woven by the weavers with Dupion.

The motifs such as floral designs, stones, kundans, animals, trees, leafs, fruits and other geometrical structures are used as major designs on the fabric. The best part is, as it is smoother and lighter, although it can be embroidered in any desired manner.
