Color blending is the technique of mixing and calibrating colors to make all new ones. There are two methods of color blending: the additive and the subtractive methods. The application of each technique depends upon the medium that is used.

When merging brightness for developing colors, additive color attributes are used. For the additive method, the standard colors include red, blue and green. Combining one of them with the same amount of different color results in the additive secondary colors including magenta, yellow and cyan. Mixing all three in the very same amounts produces the color white. Additionally, changing the lightness of any additive primary color forms a range of colors. Computer and TV screens are applications of the additive method for color blending. In this case, red, green and blue pixels are applied to make colors. These pixels have impact on color receptors in our eyes by integrating and mixing brightness together to form complex colors.

Additive color blending is different to subtractive color merging, wherein new colors are created by "subtracting" pieces of the spectrum of light existing ...
... in white light using colorful pigments or dyes, for example the ones in paints and inks. Essentially, we detect color by the process of reflecting, instead of the emitting, the light. Colors that are not reflected are absorbed by the coating material (thus, subtracted). The subtractive primary colors include cyan, yellow and magenta. Blending all three in the same amounts produces the color black. The red, yellow and blue color model, that is the structure of the traditional color wheel, represents the original model of subtractive color mixing. It is even today applied in art and art education (particularly in painting).

The color wheel, founded on spectral wavelengths, is applied, among other things, to show the additive color mixing. Using the color wheel, a color developed by blending two colorful lights can be found through the relative brightness and wavelength of two lights. This type of a relationship is not apparent with respect to colors mixed in pigment. A color circle, that shows chromatic relationships among colors, can just forecast the final color combination by comparing present colors, in contrast to literally "calculating" the specific incorporated color.

It is unclear that offering a quantitative strategy to color blending is prejudicial to subtractive color blending. In the art world, as well as in everyday society, it will continue to be important. Although, all in all, and in relative terms, subtractive color mixing will probably show a draw back before the expanding of variety of media presented by digital media: the latter are presenting new opportunities to use additive color combining to an increasing amount of imaging and previewing settings. Perhaps the future will bring an equilibrium in which these two methods of color mixing will not be exclusive, however complementary.
