All-natural Anti-cancer Supplements Gain Acceptance
Alternative therapies, holistic remedies and natural medications work. The possibilities often offer invigorating possibilities for less invasive, non-habit forming treatment of certain medical conditions. Recent revelations as portrayed by a 1997 Purdue University research report and in an American Cancer Society Guide to Complimentary and Alternative Cancer Methods strongly suggest that certain natural supplements can help in the treatment of cancer.
Two important natural products, graviola and ellagic acid, have emerged as stellar ingredients in some cancer fighting supplements. While the Food and Drug Administration does not permit any specific claims regarding the cancer fighting qualities of graviola or ellagic acid, many alternative supplement users have reported satisfaction with these products in their fights against various forms of cancer.
Graviola is a powerful natural herb from the Amazon Rainforest in South America. All-natural graviola has long been used in alternative herbal medicines. The use of graviola by holistic therapists has spread from the herb's Brazilian Rainforest roots around the ...
... globe. In recent years, graviola became the subject of several different cancer studies and the results have been promising. Indeed, graviola may prove to be one of the most beneficial of all the herbs used in natural supplements.
One 1976 plant screening by the National Cancer Institute showed that graviola leaves and stems showed active toxicity against cancer cells. Researchers indicate that specific acetogenins in graviola have been selectively toxic in these types of tumor cells:
- lung carcinoma cell lines
- human breast solid tumor lines
- prostrate adenocarcinara
- pancreatic carcinoma cell lines
- colon adenocarcinoma cell lines
- liver cancer cell lines
- human lymphoma cell lines
- multi-drug resistant human breast adenocarcinoma
In 2003, Taiwanese researchers reported that annonacin, the main graviola acetogenin, was highly toxic to the following cell lines:
- ovarian
- cervical
- breast
- bladder
- skin cancer
Ellagic acid comes from a class of phytochemicals found in red raspberries and is a polypenol. Phytochemicals are plant chemicals and are at the forefront of holistic remedies. As scientific researchers studied the beneficial, biologically active components of plants and foods, phytochemicals were identified as possessing significant antioxidant capabilities that prevent the formation of cancer-causing chemicals and suppress cancer development.
This research indicated ellagic acid provided users with other benefits. By preventing the oxidation of bad cholesterol (LDL) and by reducing the inflammation which promotes blood clotting, ellagic acid can help lower the risk of heart disease.
Graviola and ellagic acid provide antitumorous, antiparasitic, insecticidal and antimicrobial activities. Three separate laboratories have released research showing that these acetogenins are effective inhibitors of the enzyme processes commonly found in the membranes of cancerous cells. This interaction permits the acetogenins to offer toxic resistance to cancerous cells but not damage healthy cells.
While the FDA does not permit anti-cancer claims, both graviola and ellagic acid are now being used in all-natural supplements. As alternative health care specialists and providers advocate the use of natural medications, these supplements continue to gain support.
The most compelling support for graviola and ellagic acid may well be found in the head pharmacologist's summary of the Purdue Study who said that annonaceous acetogenins "not only are effective in killing tumors that have proven resistant to ant-cancer agents, but also seem to have a special affinity for such resistant cells."
Cancer cells that that survive chemotherapy can develop resistance to the originally used agent. This immune process is known as multi-drug resistance (MDR). The Purdue study and others attest that acetogenins like graviola attack the multi-drug resistant cancer cells and inhibit the growth activity of cancerous cells.13 of the 14 acetogenins tested were more potent against the spread of MDR breast cancer cells than the three standard FDA approved cancer drugs. While there are no FDFA endorsements for the use of graviola and ellagic acid, holistic therapists and patients are ple3ased with results of these anti-cancer supplements.
