Short No More - Ways To Grow Taller
You've heard them all - Shrimpy, Shorty, Runt, Tiny, Tom Thumb. You didn't come from a race of giants and everyone, or so it seems, lets you know about it. You've read and heard about all the studies dealing with the effects of a guy's height on his life. (Whether or not the results are true is irrelevant when you're the one looking up all the time, right?) Tall men get better salaries. Tall men get better (or more) women. Tall men get more respect. All the US presidents in the last 100 years or so were near or over 6 ft. Most modern male world leaders, for that matter, tend to be that tall, as well. Napoleon was the last short guy to make the history books, and look how he ended up. So, what's a guy to do?
Factors to Consider
What you do, and how effective it will be on gaining you any great increase in height, depends on several factors. First and foremost is your age. Men can keep right on growing until their mid-twenties, somewhere around age 25. So, if you're a young man and you're despairing over your small stature, there may be hope yet. Acquiring enough sleep can also help you stand a little taller, as a relaxed body tends to be an aligned body. Improper spinal alignment can actually decrease your height, causing you to not stand as straight and tall as you should. Lastly, your self-image and self-confidence can affect the way you carry yourself. A confident, positive person will tend to pull himself up to his true, full height, while a less-confident fellow will tend to slouch along. Now, eating healthy, getting plenty of rest and feeling pretty good about yourself will only gain you centimeters, not inches. And you're no Spring Chicken anymore. Is there any hope for you? Maybe!
Pilates for Height
The Pilates system of exercise is known for its ability to tone and strengthen the Core muscles - those of the body's midsection. These muscles support the body - protecting the lower back and carrying the weight of the body. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920's, it has been used by dancers and actors for years as away to improve their physique. Not intended as a way to make people taller, but rather a way to make people sleeker and stronger, Pilates devotees nevertheless claim that the exercises do, in fact, add to their height. Most likely, their original body posture was affected by tight, weak muscles in the thighs, back, neck and abdomen, pulling them downward into a slump or slouch. By following the Pilates exercises, these tightened, shortened muscles are relaxed, lengthened to their full potential, and give the individual a taller, stronger stance.
Pilates is not complicated, but to be truly effective, a trainer or teacher is the best way to learn. Many DVD's, television programs and "kits" abound for learning and practicing Pilates at home. If you don't mind sharing your exercise with others, many gyms and health clubs offer classes, too. Strengthen your way to greater height!
Yoga for Height
The gentle stretching and balancing poses of yoga practice work on the body in much the same way as Pilates does. The quiet calm of many styles of yoga practice work to relax tired, tensed, shortened muscles. Many poses also work to improve balance and strength. All of this can have a lengthening effect on the body, making one stand taller. Yoga practice can also help to improve self-image and self-esteem, giving one a mental boost, as well. Combined, the better self-image and the longer, stronger body work to improve the way one stands and walks. While an ancient practice, yoga comes in many forms. You may wish to experiment to find which form or style of yoga best suits you and your lifestyle. As with Pilates, yoga is best learned from others, either in classes or from watching DVD's or television programs. Achieve greater inner peace and greater height, at the same time!
