With record unemployment, and job advertisers being inundated with an avalanche of applicants the time has never been better for launching a non-profit organization, says government grants and free money expert Matthew Lesko.

“It’s a win-win situation,” says Lesko, the president and founder of Information USA and http://www.mlesko.net “Anyone can form one to help resolve local issues and help the less fortunate, and just because they are non-profit doesn’t mean everyone’s a volunteer †whoever runs the nonprofit gets paid fairly for their time.”

According to Lesko, there are a number of things to keep in mind. The first, he says, is whether to become a non-profit in the first place. “It depends," he says. “If someone is trying to start a new venture, they shouldn’t worry about it until they know where they are going to apply for financial support.” ...
...

Lesko has amassed a huge list of potential funding sources for non-profits as well as places where individuals can turn for grant money to help their communities without being a non-profit, and has posted them on his service website http://www.mlesko.net featuring the Government Money Club.

There are hundreds of programs that offer funds for individuals who want to help others, so why go through all the time, energy and expense to become a non-profit if you are not positive of where you are going to apply for the money?

First things first, says Lesko. Find out exactly where you are going to apply for the money and if they require you to become a non-profit, If they do, then go become one. Another way around becoming a non-profit is by working with an existing one.

“For example, you want to start a center training unemployed teenagers to become car mechanics, and you found a program that gives out money for this kind of activity, but only to non-profits. You can contact your local church, community college or any other non-profit and talk with them about an opportunity of doing the project together. Organizations like this can let you use their name, give you a desk and collect maybe 20% of what you get as an overhead activity.”

If someone is committed to starting their own non-profit but is afraid that the paperwork involved makes it too complicated and time consuming, think again, says Lesko, in his trademark question-mark suit. There are over 1,000 Small Business Development Centers around the country that will help you with any problem you may have in starting or expanding a non-profit organization. They can assist you with becoming a non-profit, finding money (although they themselves do not offer money), management problems, technical issues and more. “Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to hire a lawyer and have thousands of dollars in the bank to start a non-profit. With as little as $35 and 30 minutes of paperwork, you can be well on your way to raising funds as well as your community’s consciousness.”
