Hair loss is not necessarily hereditary. There may be reasons other than hereditary reasons too. Hereditary baldness in women occurs due to female pattern alopecia. This is genetic and it is passed on from father or mother to their daughter. Two enzymes known as aromatase ad 5a reductase may be responsible for this. Aromatase is seen more in women.

Your medication, post-partum and post-menopausal states or ovarian tumors and other gynecological condition may affect your hair. Dearth of iron or lupus, a connective tissue disorder are also the cause for hair loss. Severe stress, surgical procedures may also lead to such problems. Propecia (finasteride) which is an approved medication can reduce DHT harmones. This further reduces baldness at an early stage.
The approved medication Propecia (finasteride), which inhibits DHT, is particularly helpful in reversing genetic baldness in its early stages. Some medicines are effective when it is started early such as Rogaine(minoxidil). This works out better when used in combination of propecia. This should be used when you experience hair loss and its still at its beginning stage.
