Remember when your first impression of a scanner was a flatbed one? These days, the typical scanner, like your mobile phone, has grown smaller and more portable. Flatbed scanners are still in use today, but the need for faster and more portable methods of document scanning has manufacturers going back to the drawing board.

Before going over the different types of scanners, ask yourselves what’s wrong with the flatbed scanner. For all its versatility and ease of use, the flatbed isn’t always big enough to fit anything bigger than a legal-sized document. Furthermore, Los Angeles document scanning services deal with high volumes every day, which the flatbed is ill-equipped for.

Overhead Scanner

The overhead scanner works just like a flatbed, but it was designed with books and other wide-area media in mind. The scanning module hangs from an extended arm where it has a clearer and more encompassing view of the medium to be scanned. They’re a bit faster to operate than flatbeds, especially when you want to scan pages.

Sheetfeed ...
... Scanner

The sheetfeed scanner derives its workings from the flatbed but designed with high output in mind. This type of scanner can handle more documents at a time than the rest of the scanner family but usually at the expense of image quality. A sub-variant of the sheetfeed scanner can scan blueprints and other media too big for the overhead scanner to scan.

Drum Scanner

The drum scanner is arguably the biggest type of scanner in the market, housing advanced electronics that create high-definition scans. However, drum scanners for office use are few and far in between, if any. Aside from their low output, it takes a separate discipline to master the equipment.

If you want to know more about the different types of scanners in use today, visit the Cornell University Library website at library.cornell.edu. Ask your local document scanning services in Los Angeles about the type of scanner they use. You’ll find that it’s possible for them to use all three types and more.
