A paperless workplace may be coming to an office near you. With document scanning in Los Angeles and other places at the helm, the once proud icon of a busy workplace— stacks of paper everywhere you go— will be relegated to history real soon. This is a good opportunity to review the concept of a paperless office, especially its practicality.

If the average American worker uses around 10,000 sheets every year, the benefits of going paperless is undeniable. Eight to nine workers going paperless can spare the life of one tree every year. Despite the constant drive to go paperless, the deadline set for electronic records to take over— 1990— is long past. Three out of five offices in the U.S. are still firing up the printers.

Experts say the transition failed to include one important factor in the process: a major change in behavior. Despite scanners growing smaller but more advanced, a hard copy on hand doesn’t feel the same way as viewing a soft copy on your tablet. For now, the paperless office is a misnomer. American workplaces are still printing and keeping paper records, but this doesn’t mean scanning technology has evolved for nothing.
