The Barcelona chair was initially created and produced specifically to be featured in German Pavilion Building which was Germany’s offering for Ibero-American Exposition in 1929. The modernized contemporary icon evolved out of the joint work creation between Mies van der Rohe, the much esteemed Bauhaus architect and Lily Reich, an excellent interior designer. The early chairs were produced with the use of welds and stainless steel without seams, thus causing the chair legs to remain bolted together. Originally, pig skin and not bovine leather was used for the purpose of creating ivory colored chairs to be placed in the Pavilion.

The Barcelona chairs were subject to redesign in the year 1950. The use of stainless steel in manufacturing process of chairs for making the frame from a single piece of metal made the bolts redundant, thus enabling sleek lines. Expensive full grain aniline leather came into use instead of the earlier employed pig skin which retained an admiration while still going by the fundamental dictated of materials, design and production processes. The creative input for the Barcelona chairs was drawn ...
... from early folding chairs, particularly the X-shaped ones of the Romans and the Pharaohs. These regal examples gave the design an integrity which was then highly regarded by those that witnessed its presentation. The designer furniture is most apt for general consumer purposes also. There an appreciative and tasteful edge to it that the average consumer is bound to admire.

Today’s Barcelona chairs remain exclusive, excelling in both popularity and culturally. Its reputation hasn’t faltered even a bit over time. High quality genuine reproductions with a touch of royal and formal influence make for an iconic masterpiece that amazing complements your contemporary decors. The Barcelona chairs remain as a testament to artistic genius of the creators. The never comprising style and sophistication are truly matchless.
