The health benefits of mushrooms as well as their taste has often been overlooked. Because one of the present trends in nutrition and food is foraging and picking your own fresh vegetables, when it comes to mushrooms, there are some out there in the wild that could cause death, or at the very least, make you sick. By knowing a bit about mushrooms, their uses and benefits, one can take advantage of this nutritional food.

Nutritional Benefits

Low in sodium, the mushroom is free of cholesterol, fat-free and has no gluten. Mushrooms are low in calories and contain such nutrients as selenium, niacin, riboflavin, Vitamin D, potassium and more. Additionally, they are a good source of Vitamin B nutrients. Often one hears about the health benefits of brightly colored green and orange vegetables; however, magic mushrooms, in their white or grey coat, are also very nutritious and should be considered for their vitamins and minerals, including selenium, an antioxidant, and potassium.

Fine Flavor for Cooking

A variety of types of mushrooms can be eaten. Some varieties include the White Button, Portabella, Crimini, ...
... Maitake, Shiitake, Enoki, Oyster, and more. The White Button Mushroom is the most popular and has a mild flavor; it can be used raw in salads, cooked on pizza and in egg dishes and as a sauteed side dish or in a sauce on enhancing meat. Once can combine Shiitake mushrooms with ginger, soy sauce and scallions to create a delicious and healthy salad. Moreover, mushrooms often are used in many familiar and memorable dishes, such as the green bean casserole brought to the table at Thanksgiving or the mushroom burger, made when mushrooms are mixed with hamburger and seasoned.

Mushroom Tips

Since rinsing under the faucet may water-log the mushroom, cleaning of very dirty mushrooms should be done with a wipe of dampened paper. Within the refrigerator, they should be stored in a plastic or paper bag with some holes punched in the bag to allow for circulation. Keeping mushrooms fresh ensures they are ready when the right recipe comes along, as access to an abundance of delicious recipes can be found on the internet.

Whether you learn to find the non-poisonous mushrooms in the wild, buy them at the store or decide to grow them yourself, they are a definite bonus to your nutritional vocabulary. Moreover, they add unique flavor to your meals and can be eaten both cooked, sauteed or raw. Explore the magic of mushrooms.
