There are certain things that you must not do without during certain seasons. For instance, you should have light clothing like shorts, light T-shirts, tank tops and sandals during summer. What about for winter?

Clothes

The ideal winter clothes are sewn with insulating material between the lining and the exterior fabric. Wool is the top choice for winter clothing material. Polyester, down, and fleece are also excellent for insulation. What if you don’t have clothes in wool, polyester, down, or fleece? Well, you can wear many layers of clothing since that will also provide insulation.

Speaking of layers, it is recommended that there be at least three layers of clothing: the base layer, the insulating layer or middle layer, and the outer layer.

The base layer is the innermost layer you wear, the clothes that are directly next to your skin. The best types of fabrics are silk, polypropylene, Thermax, or Thinsulate. These materials absorb sweat and keep them away from the skin. Cotton is not recommended because once it gets wet it will also keep your skin wet and cool.

For the insulating layer, ...
... refer to the recommendations above.

The outer layer needs to be wind and water resistant. Should you venture outside, you don’t want the cold air to penetrate through your clothes. If snow is falling or if you sit outside, the last thing you want to happen is to get wet. The best kinds of jackets and coats are breathable ones that nevertheless keep out moisture and cold.

Of course, you also have to have these if you’re venturing outside: scarves, mittens, winter socks, and hats. Hats with ear covers are excellent for windier days. Along with a windbreaker, you’ll be more covered and protected against the cold wind. If you’re going to wear jeans, long underwear is practically a requirement. Ordinary sneakers can slip or get stuck in the ice, so make sure you get thick-soled, waterproof, thermal winter boots.

Curtains and Blankets

Thick curtains are very important, especially for homes with lots of windows. The cold drafts that penetrate through glass windows will be blocked effectively. Central heating does keep the walls warm, but windows are more vulnerable to the cold penetrating through. Just choose one or two thick curtains to help keep out the cold. It will be best if they are full-length curtains too, so that there’s really no escape for the cold from the outside.

Blankets are a given. Wool, polyester and fleece blankets are examples of blanket shat can help warm you up (there are kinds of fabric that will absorb cold instead of blocking it, so the more you snuggle in them the colder you’ll get). A quilted blanket is also a good choice. You can drape blankets on your sofa or on the pillows beside the fireplace. Anytime you feel cold while watching TV, you can snuggle right in.

Heaters

A centralized heating system is of course a must. Did you also know that there are clothes built with portable heaters? Climate-controlled clothing is common for winter sports athletes. This option is certainly more expensive, but it’s also something to consider.

Stay warm and don’t do anything foolish outdoors during winter. Value your health if you value your life.
