DNA testing is expensive, there's no doubt about that. The cost has to include the equipment used, the wages of the laboratory workers who carry out the tests and the postage costs of both the sample and the results back to the individuals who requested it.

Much like everything in the world, however, there are some laboratories and establishments offering cheaper paternity tests than others. They are tempting but also ask the age old question: 'if I pay less, do I get poorer quality?' and nobody wants to risk getting unreliable results from something as important as a paternity test. Before you go ahead with the test and send off your samples check to see how the test is done. Do they test for at least 13 loci on the chromosome? If the number falls less that 13 then you will have a test with less than 99% accuracy. 13 to 16 loci is acceptable and anything above that is brilliant. For exclusive paternity tests, check that the laboratory looks for at least two different loci to confirm a man is definitely not the father.

Once you've established that the actual test will give accurate results, it's time to check ...
... out the establishment themselves. Try looking online for reviews, or even ask at your local advice bureau or phone them up to ask how they are recognized by the government as legitimate. You should find they are keen to tell you or send information on staff qualifications.

Many cheap paternity testing establishments have a low price because they haven't included the price for the results to be sent back. A paternity test is useless if you're not going to told who the father is, so double check that this is included within the final price first. Also, some laboratories have extremely long waiting times, so if you're looking for a quick confirmation then you may need to pay more.

It iss always advisable to discuss paternity testing with a health professional or lawyer before you start. If you require a test for legal use then it may be eligible for funding through the court, or, you will be referred to a good quality, yet affordable laboratory.
