Breathing Life Into Artworks As A Freelance Illustrator
If you want to be an illustrator but hate the thought of sitting in a cubicle from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, then freelance illustration is the right job for you. Not only will you get to do what you love, but you’ll also have the freedom to work when you want to.
What does a freelance illustrator do?
Like typical illustrators, freelance illustrators provide a visual representation of a certain content or text. This is why illustrators can be commonly seen working in or with publishing companies. They are the ones responsible for creating book covers and other illustrations related to the book they’re working on.
Aside from drafting book covers, freelance illustrators can also work on advertisements, album covers, greeting cards, posters, newspapers, magazines and even video games.
But of course, the scope of an illustrator’s work will depend on what the client wants. It’s their responsibility to translate the client’s demands into a visually-stunning work of art.
And, since freelance illustrators are not tied to one company, ...
... they can work on a variety of projects with different clients.
What does it take to become a freelance illustrator?
Obviously, artistic ability is a requirement in this type of profession. Although a degree in design will give you an edge over other illustrators, it is not required. After all, what’s important is you can artistically do when a client approaches you with a project.
You should also prepare a portfolio featuring your best previous works. This will give potential clients an idea of your abilities and what you can do. And, since most illustration jobs nowadays are done using the computer, a strong background in CAD or computer-aided design will be extremely helpful.
How can freelance illustrators earn?
Earning as a freelance illustrator can be done in a variety of ways such as through one’s own hard work, with a help of an agent, or by setting up an online gallery.
Finding Clients
Working alone as a freelance illustrator involves going out and finding your own clients. This could either be done by using your previous connections or building new one through a variety of means such as advertising your services through online social accounts.
Once you have found a potential client, you will need to discuss the scope of the project that he or she wants. This typically includes where your artwork will be used, how it will be used, how long it should take you to finish it, and of course, how much you’ll get for your work.
Agent Representation
Agents or agencies market the illustrators signed to them. In other words, they are the ones responsible for finding clients for you. The biggest benefit of being represented is that the agent will handle the negotiation process between you and the client. They will also charge higher fees for your service. However, since they act as a third party, they will take a percentage from your earnings as commission.
Online Gallery
Many freelance illustrators earn by posting and selling their work in online galleries or stock websites. In this method, you don’t have to directly deal with clients since each posted artwork already has a fixed price and clients can choose from a variety of designs depending on their needs.
Of course, there might be instances when the client contacts you to request minor modifications of your artworks for a certain fee.
