CLEP Exams

There are currently 34 CLEP exams offered by the College Board. Each exam allows students to demonstrate that they possess knowledge of material taught in undergraduate college equivalent to the knowledge level of a student who has actually taken the course. Students can use CLEP tests to gain credit by examination instead of having to actually take the course. If a student feels like he or she could pass a course final exam without attending any of the lectures, CLEP might work well for that student. CLEP exams are an excellent way to receive college credits without investing the time and expense involved in taking college courses. Universities and colleges usually give the same number of credits for a satisfactory CLEP score as they give to students who pass the corresponding course. CLEP exams are available in the following subject areas: composition and literature, science and mathematics, foreign language, history and social sciences, and business. Each exam costs $72 to take plus any service or administrative fees, which is payable to the testing center. However, eligible military personnel, veterans, ...
... and civilian employees can take CLEPs free of charge.

CLEP Formats and Scoring

Administered by a computer, each timed CLEP exam lasts 90 minutes. Each correct answer counts positively and then a fraction of incorrect answers are then subtracted from the total. There are no deductions for any unanswered questions on a CLEP exam. Most of the CLEP exams are multiple choice, with a few involving fill in the blank questions. The English Composition with Essay CLEP exam involves both multiple choice and formal essay writing and students taking this exam will receive their score in about four weeks. Since most CLEP exams are completely computer-based, students receive their scores immediately after they complete the test. If a student needs an official score report, he or she may specify so at the beginning of the CLEP exam and will receive the report in about a month. The College Board scores CLEP tests on a scale from 20 to 80 and the majority of schools grant college credit for scores 50 or higher. However, individual schools determine passing CLEP scores. Higher learning institutions are also responsible for determining the amount of credits that students will receive for each CLEP test.

CLEP Study Materials

Published books, study guides, and study-at-home educational programs for CLEP preparation are available online, in bookstores, libraries, and some retail stores. These study methods feature practice questions, exam descriptions, and test-taking tips and strategies for CLEP exams. Some CLEP prep methods also provide easy timelines to help students set up flexible study schedules as well as present expert advice in preparing students for proper study and success. The lessons many preparatory methods use reinforce necessary skills and key tutorials enhance specific abilities needed for CLEP tests. Targeted drills can help students to organize study and increase comprehension, while full-length practice tests create mock experiences to CLEP exam days.

CLEP Tips

Although there is no limit to the number of tests that each student can take, some schools limit the amount of college credits they will award through CLEP. Students should first check with the school they attend or plan to attend and make sure to choose the CLEP tests according to the learning institution's policies. Each college sets their own testing schedule, so students should be aware of registration deadlines and test dates. Students should also keep in mind that they may be able to transfer knowledge gained through life experiences, independent study, professional development, coursework, cultural pursuits, travel, and various special interests into valuable college credits using CLEP. Whether demonstrating knowledge acquired through life experience or recently learned through independent study, students can gain valuable college credits using CLEP exams and save time and money in the process!
