Becoming a certified dental assistant (CDA) can enhance your credibility and the public's confidence on you in rendering good service to them. As this is one job for which a degree is not a necessary component, there are various ways to become a dental assistant other than through the conventional way of pursuing an educational training program. So what are some of the ways, you ask? Read on to educate yourself on these options.

One way is to enroll in an accredited training program. The program should equip you with the necessary knowledge and practical trainings to become a dental assistant. Care should be taken to ensure that the program that you enroll is accredited through the American Dental Association (ADA)'s Commission on Dental Accreditation. In the case of an online program, you should make sure that it is accredited by Accreditation Commission of Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) too. Upon graduating from the program, you will then sit for the certification examination by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB).

Another way is to work as a dental assistant for a minimum of two years. ...
... By working full-time for two years, you will become certified DA. The justification is because you would have amassed considerable experience after two years of employment.

Can working part-time enable me to be certified? In the event that you are not able to work full-time for two years, you can still be a certified DA by working part-time. Nevertheless, you would have to work for four years in order to be certified.

Now that you decide to pursue a career as a dental assistant, you should assess which option best suits your current lifestyle. In addition, financial capability should be taken into account too. If you are financially capable, obtaining a formal training program can be considered. All in all, you should spend time evaluating your situation and explore more on the prospective option.
