Don't forget to catch Exit The King in NYC this Spring, especially if you are looking for something classical. The last in Eugene Ionesco's trilogy on his fictional 'King Berenger', this play talks about death and the loss of power. We all believe ourselves to be supremely immortal, and perhaps, consider ourselves lucky to die of old age. But, it is in the winter of our lives that we realize that all the Universe allows us is notional power, and this too, is fleeting.

Ionesco has produced an astounding repertoire of absurdist drama that with their wit and irony can even become farcical at times. And the fact that most of his plays are still very popular shows that his work has withstood the test of time. Now you can watch the critically lauded revival of Exit The King in NYC's Ethel Barrymore Theatre, and be both amused and horrified by the theatrics of an impressive cast led by Geoffrey Rush and Susan Sarandron. The play has been adapted by the director Neil Armfield and Rush, and is based on a production commissioned and produced by Company B and Malthouse Melbourne. It stands out for its production qualities and sets ...
... which at times seem to reach out into the audience to gather them closer. The make-up and costumes remind you of old, rancid fairy tale characters, and you can almost smell the decay and the regret. And with the asides and the banter flying across the stage, you sit transfixed as the barbs and gibes dart over your head and into the darkness.

As the story unfolds, you might realize that there is some irony to the staging of Exit The King in NYC. The play focuses on the last vestiges of power held by King Berenger played by Rush and his two queens played by Sarandron and the younger Lauren Ambrose. Berenger is now four hundred years old, or so he is told by Sarandron. And in his lifetime, he has ruined the economy of his kingdom and the lives of his subjects. He no longer has any power and even daily ablutions become tedious now. As he despairs, rants and raves, the other characters try to ease his agitation but at times only end up contributing to it. Each of the queens has their own agenda, and the last few palace staff are also tired and frustrated. But amidst this futility that often reaches greater levels of absurdity that you knew existed, you have the humor and the antics of Rush that make you wonder whether you should mourn or chuckle instead.

Look around at the rest of the audience as you watch Exit The King in NYC and you will realize that most of them including yourself, can actually identify with everything the characters state. Yes, we are getting older even though we would like not to think about it. Cosmetic surgery does work but it also has its limitations. And though we try to delude ourselves that we can make time stand still, it is impossible to hold it down. And rather than face this cruel reality, we conjure up megalomaniacal fantasies for ourselves that only dissipate when Death stares us in the face.
