Chikankari or Chikan embroidery is an traditional offering from Luknow, India. This work is very fine and intricate embroidery that meant to enhance the fabric which it adorns, tremendously. The origin is not exactly known, and there are a few stories that go around with it.

Thus the more popular or widely believed is that of Nur Jehan, Emperor Jehangir’s wife introduced this art to Mughal countries and it has been followed since as a regular feature of wearing to certain class of fabrics, like cotton, muslin, silk, organza, chiffon, net etc.

Chikan work is mostly known as hand embroidery is done on plain white fabrics. Later it was weared on cool light shades. Today market uses varieties of color threads based on the demand of the manufacture. The chikan work process is very simple. It is done in cotton and silk also. The pattern is first block printed on the fabric, firstly done on the entire body or the portion meant for it. The embroidery is done on the pattern blocks. The block prints is then washed away carefully leaving behind only the embroidery.

The more frequent variety of stitches include mesh stitch which involves delicately parting the threads of the base fabric and then weaving in and out of the gaps created.

This type of work is developed and originated in Lucknow as an ethnic art with a population of craftsmen engaged in it as a means of livelihood. The followers of this particular art are also available in different places of India, but the Luknowi style of embroidery is now a brand and worldwide well known.

The geographical indication status got in 2008 and by virtue only those situated in Lucknow and nearby surrounding areas can use this type of Luknowi chikankari label for embroidery work. This work is done on saris, kurtas, salwar kameez and dhotis etc.
