The windshield of the car is the driver's eye to the world and their first line of defense against outside elements such as flying rocks, rain, hail, and wind etc. Windshields are also costly to repair, so it is best to take care of the windshield to prolong its life and to avoid costly windshield repairs down the road.

Keep it Clean

Crystal clear car windows not only improve the overall look of the car, but can also help eliminate driving problems such as obstruction of view and maximized night glare that can slow the driver's response in emergency driving situations. Cleaning the windshield regularly prevents a buildup of dirt and goo that can require abrasive scraping and scrubbing to remove. This can scratch the windshield and damage the wipers as they scrape across it. When cleaning the car windows, be sure to spend most of the time on the windshield, because this is the window that will be used the most, and clean it last to prevent it from getting re-soiled during the cleaning process. Best way to keep the windshield clean is to use a microfiber cloth along with a non-abrasive cleanser. ...
... To keep the windshield spotless, dry the windshield right after a rainstorm or when it gets wet.

Preventing Cracks and Repairs

While cleaning the windshield, inspect for chips, rocks and cracks. Also, check the wipers for torn rubber which can expose metal or plastic in the wiper blades and scratch the windshield when in use. If there are cracks, chips, small holes, or broken windshield wipers, it is best to get them repaired or replaced before they lead to more costly repairs later. When possible, park the car under some form of shelter like a garage of carport, to protect the windshield from flying debris in a storm and from passing cars and trucks with debris. A car cover can also be used to protect the windshield from flying debris. Parking the car under shelter in the winter helps protect the windshield from harsh scraping.

Caring For The Windshield in The Winter

A sudden change in temperature can crack the windshield, so avoid use boiling water to defrost a frozen windshield in the winter. Instead, use de-icer or a plastic scraper to chip away at the ice. If there is a chip or crack already in the windshield, be sure to get it fixed before the sudden drop in temperatures, which can cause it to crack even more. Avoid using metal kitchen knives or spatulas to remove ice from the windshield; the metal can dig into your windshield and cause it to chip. Try switching to winter wiper blades which are more durable for winter's harsh conditions. Changing the washer fluid to a winter washer fluid that contains anti-fog and ice mix solution to help make clearing the windshield easier.

Windshield Repair

When it comes to having the windshield repaired, it is vital that the installer is certified. An improperly installed windshield can be blown out by an exploding air bag in an accident. The blown or popped out window can allow the roof to cave in and crush the occupants. According to Debra Levy, president of the Auto Glass Safety Council. When looking to have a windshield replaced, the driver should call at least 3 different repair shops. Questions the driver should ask the installer include, whether or not they use original equipment, and how long the car should sit before it can be driven. Be sure installers wear gloves during repair to prevent oil on the hands from preventing the adhesive from sticking properly. To inspect for proper repairs, be sure the molding is straight and there is no visible adhesive on the outside or inside of the car. To find a reputable windshield installer in your area, check with National Glass Association which features certified installers who are up to date in windshield installation and repair techniques.
