We are all looking for an ideal home; we hope that one day we will rest in our dream house but until that point, we have quite a lot of moving to do. The first move (or change of residence) occurs for most individuals when they leave for college, and from that point on, the moving period keeps going. We move for our workplace, for our studies, sometimes even for our friends and family, and it would be ideal if we could move in a place we enjoy. The little things count; however, there are some major things you need to consider when renting a room. Within this article, we shall discuss of the main features that should be check listed before renting a room.

What To Look For?

When looking for that perfect room to rent, there are certain things no home should be without.

§ Electrical Outlets - Check whether all electrical outlets fit the standards, and whether there are enough outlets to power all you electrical devices (computer, video games, cell phone chargers etc). Having one in the whole room can prove to be rather tricky since you will have to buy extension cords for just about everything
§ Working ...
... appliances - One of the most important requirements is to have working appliances in your rental. Freezers and stoves are some of the most important appliances to check - make sure the stove heats evenly and if the freezer actually cools everything at the right temperature..
§ No leaks - Plumbing is probably the most annoying issue when broken since it creates a lot of mess, and implies quite some trouble when fixing it. Test out all taps and showerheads for both hot and cold water, and check water pressure as well.
§ Broadband - We live in the technology age - it is about time all landlords provide broadband internet. It does not have to best connection ever, however, decent broadband should be free for most rentals.
§ Free Local Phone Calls - It may not seem much of an advantage, however, having the opportunity of calling your friends for free whenever you need, can be quite useful. And if you do not have to pay for it anymore, it is even more an advantage.
§ Garden maintenance - Now, some rentals may not have a garden, however, for those that do, make sure you ask for garden maintenance. You will not only have the times to pluck the leaves out, therefore, having someone do it for you will be rather helpful.
§ Noise level - Noise can be rather disrupting, and it cannot be rated based on one visit alone. You should visit the room at different times of the day in order to make sure the noise is kept at an acceptable level.

What to Ask Your Landlord

Aside from your own research, you sometimes have to discuss with your landlord in regards to possible improvements, and other details that might make a difference with your decision. A series of questions can involve:

§ How many other individuals live in the building? Having housemates can be a fun thing sometimes, however, you will need to check the type of people they are, since not everybody gets along with everybody.
§ Latest renovations. Find out whether the landlord has done any major renovations in the past and what were they in regards. Remember to ask whether any improvements will be scheduled in the near future and what will these improvements involve.
§ Possible repairs. Things break, without a doubt, and sometimes without anybody's fault. Find out who will be responsible for these types of repairs - you or the landlord.

Finding the perfect room to rent is probably like finding the perfect shoe - it has to fit your perfectly for it to be an excellent choice.
