Politics In Holi, Dented And Painted Indian Politicians
The Arab countries, some of which have registered massive public outrage, now are gradually restoring themselves on the path of democracy. Egypt, Libya, Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Oman, Yemen etc. are undergoing change in the twenty first century. These countries are pursuing through conflict and bloodshed just to see a change in leadership. India is also eyeing at the same however through democratic means. Its General Elections are scheduled for April and May 2014. Interestingly enough this year Holi, one of the most vibrant festivals of India is falling on the eve of the General elections.
Holi is the festival of colours for the entire nation. People colour each other with paints or coloured powder making it difficult for others to recognize them. Now at this point when the colour festival is about to hit the deck, elections are queuing up. Elections have become so much like Holi. In the run up to the elections all leaders are willing to change their colours.
As election approaches the politicians’ desepartely try to interweave coalition. Changing stands and shifting loyalties is a much awaited trend ...
... for netas which manifests itself when elections knock on the door.
History is witness to such ‘chameleon like change of colours ’ of the leaders. It is said, when a ship is about to sink, the first trying to leave it are the mice. The situation is evident with the Congress lagging far behind in the race for ruling the country for a third consecutive term. Netas from the ‘sinking ship’ have already started switching to other parties. Senior Congress leader Jagdambika Pal left the party on grounds of “not given due importance” a week back. The Narendra Modi wave is surely on a high rise. A former BJP leader who left the national outfit and became an MP from Kaiserganj on an SP ticket, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is shading saliva again to book a ticket for himself from the BJP – a party expected to come to power. Kirti Vardhan Singh who resigned from SP is ill famous for his side changing tactics or colour changing ability. He left SP to join BJP. He had a stint with BSP earlier. When asked about his resignation he said he was not feeling ‘comfortable’ anymore and should join a ‘democratic’ outfit like BJP. The Indian Justice Party founder Udit Raj has also switched to the BJP.
None can forget RLD chief, Ram Vilas Paswan who alienated himself from the ruling BJP when Gujarat riots occurred to save his Muslim vote bank, has apparently re-registered into the NDA fold, an alliance dominated by the BJP. Lalu Prasad Yadav who decided to distance himself from the Congress in the 2009 General elections has again tied a political knot with it before 2014 General elections. The SP and BSP who could not help cursing Congress before 2009 elections continued to give their support from outside to the UPA after the polls. Sharad Pawar’s NCP which has been in power both in the Center and Maharashtra for almost a decade, is now willing to join the bandwagon – NDA led by Narendra Modi, a leader Pawar has slammed so far.
