Paper quilling as a hobby may be very interesting and exciting but there are many experienced paper crafters who are unaware of the proper method on how to quill paper. The procedure takes some time getting used to but it is fairly simple. One of the best aspects of the art of paper quilling is the fact that you do not require many materials. The items that you do need are small objects that can be found in drawers or have been left unused.
The most important tools used in paper quilling happen to be inexpensive and you only need a few items. In other words, you might already own some of them in your home. The procedure must be learnt carefully but if you pay attention, it does not take much time and you will begin to enjoy it and want to try out more than once.
It is necessary to keep in mind that the three main tools for quilling are curling tool, glue and paper strips.
Necessary Steps
a.Strips of Quilling paper:In most cases, the width of the used paper is 1/8 inch while paper that has a width of 1/16” is used mainly for the purpose of fine quilling and detailing. However, wider strips like 3/8 ...
... inch, ½ inch and ¼ inch are mainly used in the case of 3D sculpting and fringed flowers.
Like other paper quillers, you may have to prepare your own paper strips. The coils need to be cut as accurately as possible in order to impart them with a nice appearance but the process is time-consuming and complex. It is recommended that you buy a pack of different 1/8 inch colored strips which cost a small sum of money.
b.Glue: Good quality craft glue will work well for paper quilling as it dries very fast. As you gain experience, your choice of glue will become more precise and improve soon. However, novices must work with glue that is of good quality and easily available.
c.Curling tool: In order to curl the paper strips, you need to use a tool that you can handle easily. A slotted tool, corsage pin, needle quilling tool, round toothpick, hat pin can be used. In case you are using the needle tool, pins or the toothpick, you first need to curl the paper by rolling it around the central shaft. A quilling tool holds the quilling strip at one end and that will help you to make it curl while you rotate the handle on the tools.
Each type of curling tool has its share of advantages and disadvantages. The needle type tool produces a little centerat the coil which makes rolling and starting the curl a bit difficult. The slotted tool is useful for beginners. Slotted tools are a bit expensive but it is worth the investment if you want to learn how to quill paper fast and easily. Once you are accustomed to the process, you can find out more about the most important tools in paper quilling and also use the needle tool rolling and finger rolling processes.
