As the name suggests wastewater is used water which contains human wastes, food wastes and chemicals. Wastewater is usually of two types; one is domestic wastewater released from homes, offices, organizations which comprise of sewage and grey water from bathrooms, kitchens and laundries. Another type of wastewater is industrial wastewater which is a liquid discharged from manufacturing processes, for instance sugar processing plants, soft drink companies, metal processing companies etc.

A wastewater management company undertakes the task of treating wastewater released from homes and establishments. It is vital to treat the waste water because it would play havoc if released directly to the environment. Because of the existence of harmful bacteria, chemicals present in the wastewater it might turn out to be a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Also, the wastewater should be treated to remove pathogenic organisms, to remove organic and inorganic matter which would otherwise cause pollution. The principal objective of wastewater treatment is to safely dispose human and industrial effluents without danger to human health ...
... and natural environment. Using wastewater for irrigation purpose is smart utilization and it is also an effective form of wastewater disposal.

There are different stages involved in the purification of waste water namely physical, chemical and biological processes. The physical process of wastewater purification involves sedimentation, aeration and filtration. Sedimentation is the initial step which involves deposition of solid waste. However, under the aeration process oxygen content is increased by mixing the waste with oxygen which is generated in aeration tanks. The final stage of sewage treatment plant incorporates disinfection in which the sewage is disinfected by removing toxicity which then becomes fit for disposing in local water reservoirs.

Tons of wastewater released from mills, factories and industries is treated in sewage treatment plants. These are the large facilities that treat wastewater which is rich in hazardous contaminants. Solid waste from wastewater can easily be separated but extricating waste in the form of liquid and gas is a tough deal. There is a large amount of chemical and biological contaminants in the wastewater and these impurities are efficiently removed from the wastewater in these large facilities. Harmful toxins and contaminants are removed from the wastewater with the help of chemicals. Chlorination and oxidation are some of the most common chemical treatment use in these plants. In biological treatment, bacteria and other microorganisms are used to decompose wastewater biochemically. The biological treatment involves two major categories namely aerobic and anaerobic. Treatment of wastewater is very crucial because proper treatment of wastewater not just reduces health risks to humans and animals but it also prevents surface and groundwater contamination. Ineffective wastewater treatment allows bacteria, viruses and other diseases which are very dangerous to humans, animals and environment. Moreover, it also increases the nitrate levels in ground water.
