Daniel’s Unlucky Desk

My best friend Daniel is a skillful, clever and well-informed business man. He always finds a best way to get the best out of his investment, but sometimes an intelligent person also makes a mistake. The same happened to my friend Daniel. Let me tell you his story.

After working on a long project and spending nearly 15 hours a day in the office, I was feeling tired. So, I thought to take a day off, spend some time with myself and sleep till late. That night I watched a movie and had a drink. It made me fall asleep on my couch, but I forgot one important thing and that spoiled my morning. I forgot to put my mobile on “silent mode”.

I got up swearing and cursing my mobile and checked the name on my mobile screen. It was Daniel. I picked up the call.

Daniel yelled “DUDE! Guess what?”

I also yelled at him “DUDE! I don’t know! Why are you calling me this early?”

Daniel boasted “My application for loan got accepted!”

I asked “Which loan?”

Daniel replied “The one I applied for my new office. Do you remember?”

... know what he was talking about as we haven’t met since last Christmas. I just went with the flow.

I replied “Yes, yes, I remember. Good for you man. Congratulations!”

Daniel ordered “Meet me at Caravan.”

I reacted “Dude, let me sleep. I took a day off to relax and spend some lone time.”

Daniel exclaimed “So, today is your day off. Ha ha! I got you. Now, you are definitely coming.”

I muttered “Darn!” and said “Alright, I am coming in 15 minutes.”

I got ready and went to the café thinking “May be he wants to talk something serious.” But my thinking was so inaccurate. He took me to his new office and showed me the furniture he made for his employees.

I couldn’t stop myself from saying “You could have shown me your office on Sunday.”

Daniel explained “Man, we are here not only to see my office, but also to discuss the furniture options for my cabin.”

I looked at his cabin and it was empty. No furniture.

I suggested “You should have made your cabin furniture with the common furniture. Why didn’t you?”

Daniel uttered “actually dude, I spent too much in the common furniture.”

I responded with anger “You should have planned, man.”

Daniel replied “I lost my mind in the excitement.”

I asked “Now, what?”

Daniel explained “I am thinking of buying Second Hand Office Furniture. I know a guy, who knows a guy who wants to sell his desk at a fair price. The design is great; the color of the desk is matching my common furniture. I want you to come with me to that guy’s place. I want you to check the desk from your side”

I affirmed “Alright, let’s go.”

We got in his car and went to Whitehill Ln. The guy’s name was Josh. He took us to his basement and showed us his office desk.

Daniel said “Man, take a look.”

I didn’t know anything about second hand office furniture or home furniture, but just to brag I checked the desk from my side. I checked the drawers and the door of the file cabinet and said “It is good.”

Daniel asked “Should I buy it?”

I knew that I am not so good at buying furniture, but I said “Yes, go for it.”

Daniel talked to Josh, paid him on the spot, and told him to send the desk at his office address.

I thought I escaped the situation, but I did not. After a few weeks Daniel called me again and this time his tone was not so happy.

He started the conversation by shouting “That desk ruined my business!”

I responded calmly “What happened man?”

He explained me everything. He said “First week, everything was good. I put my computer on my new desk, I arranged my files in the cabinet and I put some stationery in the drawers. The desk was quite comfortable. It all happened when one of my clients from Cambridge visited my office. We were talking about some business goals and I was explaining him everything. To make an impression, I got up and sat on the desk and it broke ‘Thud’. It was an embarrassing moment. Everybody was looking at me.”

I asked him “why did you sit on the desk?”

Daniel replied “I don’t know, but after that incident that client is not receiving my calls. I showed the desk to a local carpenter and he said he cannot repair it. Help me here man!”

I consoled him “Let me talk to some of my contacts.”

Daniel thanked me “Alright man, call me when you have something. I am out of furniture again.”

I assured him “Don’t worry man. I will call you.”
