In the year 1986, Michael Jackson - the king of pop, was diagnosed with vitiligo, and in a ninety minute interview by Oprah Winfrey in 1993, Michael Jackson for the first time admitted that he was suffering from an illness, and dismissed allegations regarding bleaching of his skin. This interview and admittance of suffering from vitiligo helped in promoting awareness about this disease which was almost unknown during that time.

Vitiligo is a disease which causes depigmentation of the skin, in patches. Vitiligo occurs when the cells responsible for pigmentation of skin, known as melanocytes, either die or are unable to function properly. The reason for occurrence of vitiligo is not completely understood yet and is very complex.

Recent studies and evidences have found vitiligo is caused by combined environmental autoimmune genetic factors. It is very common amongst people suffering from thyroid disorders.

Vitiligo can be classified into two broad groups:
1) Non-segmental: In the non segmental type of vitiligo (NSV) , there is some type of symmetry regarding to the location of the depigmented patches. ...
... New patches are formed with time, which can be formed over various parts of the body or can be localized or concentrated over one part or a particular region of the body.NSV , unlike its segmental counterpart (which occurs during teenage generally), can occur at any age
2) Segmental vitiligo: Segmental vitiligo (SV) is different in appearance, its treatment also differs from the treatment for NSV. Segmental vitiligo tends to affect those regions of the skin which are connected to the spinal cord through dorsal roots. The spreading of the patches in segmental vitiligo is much more rapid than NSV and untreated patches remain for life.
