Dental implants have gained immense popularity since the 1980’s and are, today, widely regarded by dental healthcare professionals as the most sophisticated tooth replacement technology on the market. The field of dental implantology and fixed oral rehabilitation is constantly undergoing development and advancement, so what is available today for those in need of new teeth is leaps ahead of what was possible yesteryear.

In this four-part article series, a Stratford dental implant surgeon talks to us about teeth implants, the advancements that have been made in the field and about the protocol making a dramatic difference in the lives of patients who have lost most or all of their original adult teeth: All on Four® dental implants.

Let’s start by providing our audience with a better understanding of what dental implants are...

“Sure, dental implants are like small titanium screws, which are surgically placed in the jawbone where the root of the missing tooth used to be. An abutment is attached to the top of this implant and this is used to provide sturdy support for a ceramic tooth, in the case of ...
... a single crown or, if a patient is having multiple or even all of their teeth replaced, a fixed dental prosthesis, or fixed bridge,” explains a Stratford dental implant surgeon. “Every patient receives a totally customized dental restoration, so that their new tooth or teeth fits in perfectly with the rest of their smile.”

So dental implants are used to support the actual replacement tooth or teeth?

“That is correct. In essence, a dental implant is similar to an artificial tooth root.”

You mentioned that dental implants are used to replace one or more missing teeth. What happens if a patient is wearing dentures? Can he or she receive a new set of teeth using dental implants?

“Yes! In fact, in 1993, All-on-Four dental implants were introduced to the market and they enabled dental implant surgeons such as myself to provide patients with a brand new set of upper and/or lower teeth in as little as a single day. The procedure can typically be done in a few hours and only requires four dental implants to be used to support a non-removable prosthetic dental bridge, which resembles a complete set of teeth and gums.”

“So, it doesn’t matter if you’ve lost one tooth, multiple teeth or even all of your teeth... many of the patients we treat at our dental implants facility near Stratford have been diagnosed with a ‘failing’ dentition as a result of gum disease. And many others have been wearing removable dentures for several years. In either case, All on Four dental implants can be used to provide them with a far more sophisticated solution to missing teeth.”

Wow! New teeth in only one day? Do you achieve these results in all patients?

“Not in all patients... but in most cases, we are able to provide patients with new, non-removable teeth in as little as a single day and with one surgery.”
