What Is Laser Hair Removal And Does It Really Work?
What is the Process?
The process of getting rid of unwanted hair by using lasers essentially consists of having a controlled shaft of light that is extremely concentrated aimed at the hair. The pigments in the hair, mostly melanin, will pick up the beam of light and absorb its energy. This will result in the follicles of the hair being damaged to a point where they will not grow as quickly or as thickly as they did before. This process is much more effective than shaving or waxing, and tends to be a great deal less painful. People with darker hair will find the process to be more effective because they have a greater amount of melanin in the hair that will be able to absorb the light from the laser.
Does it Actually Work?
This process works well, but is not as permanent as most people think. There are a few key factors to consider when looking at the effectiveness of laser hair removal. The first factor to consider is that a person will often need between three and seven treatments for the process to be considered truly effective. This is because there are several different stages of hair growth, including ...
... a growing phase and a resting phase. If the hair is caught in the growing phase, then the treatment will be able to slow that growth and stop the follicles from growing as quickly in the future. If the hair is caught by the laser in the resting phase, then the treatment will not be nearly as effective.
A second factor to consider is that the process will need to repeated a few times a year, albeit in a greatly reduced manner. The parts of the body that have had the hair removed will need to be maintained in order for the smoothest skin to be achieved. The average number of times a year that a person will need to have his or her removal of hair maintained is between one and four.
The third factor to look at when thinking about the effectiveness of this process is whether or not a person is resistant to the treatment. About 5% of the people in the world will have a hard time getting rid of their hair through the use of lasers. These people are those who have irregular hormone cycles, very light colored hair, extremely dark, long hair and dark skin, or are addicted to tanning. Those who are compulsive tanners are highly advised to not undergo procedures that remove hair using lasers because the tanning will cause the skin to blister. Those who are genetically conditioned to have more hair will also have a harder time achieving success through this process.
