Perth is the capital as well as the largest city of Western Australia. The weather in Perth is governed by the prevalent Mediterranean climate. The climate in Perth is characterized by summers which last from December till March. The summers are particularly dry and hot with February taking the top spot as the hottest month of the year. The winter months are relatively cooler and rainfall during the period from May to September make the winters wet. The rainfall in Perth is somewhat moderate although it occurs throughout the year. It would be amazing to know that Perth stands at the fourth position in the list of Australia’s wettest capitals.

Furthermore, the weather in Perth exhibits remarkable traits which mark its distinction. The summer months receive intermittent showers rather than being completely dry. The showers can be resultants of feeble cold fronts, inconsistent thunderstorms and remnants of the tropical cyclones approaching from the north-west direction of Western Australia. The summers in Perth also experience a typically unique phenomenon known as the “Fremantle Doctor” which is a cold sea breeze ...
... flowing in from the south west. This breeze facilitates adequate relief from the north-easterly winds which increase the temperature during summer.

Another major city Adelaide also experiences the effect of Mediterranean climate. Adelaide weather is characterized by slightly wet winters and dry summers. The winter months bring in more rainfall than the summers. The average expected temperature in Adelaide is about 29 degrees Celsius during the summer months i.e. between December and February. However, there are instances when temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius have dominated the summers. For the sake of facts, the highest recorded temperature in Adelaide is 46.1 degrees Celsius. This magnanimous reading was taken twice in the summer month of January in 1939.

The studies of recent Adelaide weather reports can apply adequate emphasis to the increasing temperatures during the summer months. The summer of 2013-14 reportedly showed the dominance of high temperatures throughout the season. There were 13 days during the months of January, February and March when the temperatures didn’t slide below 40 degrees and 9 such instances when the mercury didn’t fall below 42 degrees. Above all, the summer of 2013-14 has five consecutive days when the soared beyond 42 degrees Celsius. These spiking hikes in temperature and consistent heat waves have shifted the attention primarily to global warming. Such variances in the climatic conditions of Adelaide have raised concerns regarding the effects of pollution and other activities related to global warming.

Speaking of rainfall in Adelaide weather reports, we barely find anything. This statement can be credited to the scanty rainfall experienced here. The summer basically lags behind in rainfall with unpredictable, intermittent and light showers which can measure up to 20mm on an average. On the other hand, winters can bring in fairly higher rainfall measures. This can be observed from the fact that June experiences highest rainfall around an average of 80mm. Adelaide is also counted among the driest state capitals of Australia.
