With Impressionism, Broadway makes another entry into the arena of romantic plays, bringing together two iconic Tony Award winners Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen. Currently playing at the Gerald Schoenfeld theatre, this play is directed by Jack O'Brien who won Tony Awards for his direction of The Coast of Utopia, Henry IV and Hairspray.

Set in New York in the spring of 2009, it tells the story of an international photojournalist and a New York gallery owner. These two characters played by Irons and Allen respectively become deeply and passionately intertwined. At the same time they are also bound to their professional lives. Their relationship finally helps them heal various painful aspects of each other's lives.

In Impressionism, Broadway doesn't just offer up a regular romance. Instead it focuses more on the changes that individual lives undergo when love takes over. And with a cast that contains both a combination of seasoned and fresh faces, this play does stand out as starkly different from the regular fare.

Irons made his debut on Broadway with Glenn Close in 'The Real Thing'. This won him a Tony Award ...
... for Best Actor in a Play. He then alternated between the stages of London and New York while also working on a number of Hollywood projects. Among his most famous contributions are The French Lieutenants Women, Stealing Beauty, The Man in the Iron Mask and the much loved animated film The Lion King where he did the voice of Scar. Allen won her Tony Award for 'Burn This'. She has done a number of Hollywood films. The more recent ones are The Bourne Supremacy, The Upside of Anger, Bonneville and The Bourne Ultimatum. The rest of the cast includes Andre De Shields, Michael T. Weiss, Marsha Mason, Aaron Lazar, Margarita Levieva and Hadley Delaney, all of whom play pivotal roles in the progression of this tale.

With Impressionism, Broadways veteran theatre critics have posted mixed reviews. Apart from skepticism, the play has had a number of delays in its release prompting concern from insiders about whether it would ever see the light of day. Most of the criticism has been directed at the script rather than the acting and the sets, with the credentials of the playwright Michael Jacobs not being considered good enough. It is true that he has worked more for television than theatre, but his skill at handling delicate and subtle emotions cannot be overlooked. And when combined with the talent of O'Brien and a powerhouse of casting, it is inevitable that the end result is magical.

In order to book tickets for Impressionism, Broadway's box office can be easily accessed through a number of authorized websites. These allow you to book your tickets and even cancel or change the dates at your convenience, though reading the fine print before you choose website would be ideal. Tickets are priced between $66.50 and $116.50, though many of these sites offer discounts to members which is also a facility you can easily avail of. And while standing in the queue at the box office waiting to buy your ticket does have a charm, there's nothing better than skipping the line completely, with your e-ticket safely ensconced in your jacket pocket.
