Everyone knows how serious the competition can be on the Internet. It isn't easy getting your site to the top in the search engine rankings, and there are always new competitors coming online. The fact is, to excel you must offer something the other sites don't. Here are three "extras" you can offer to set yourself apart from your competition.

1. Establish a community. Some retail niches are especially ripe for this. For example model train enthusiasts love writing posting in forums about their hobby. Establishing a community creates a sense of loyalty and a sense of being cared for.

2. Specialize. Don't just sell quilts; sell quilts made from recycled fabrics. It earns you cred with the eco-conscious and the frugal. Don't just sell guitar strings; place a survey on the order page about the customers favorite songwriters. Then ship a tab sheet for a song in that category when you ship the guitar strings.

3. Have a blog and keep it up. If you're running an e-commerce site, you don't have time to blog about your product being in the news or a famous person having one. That's why you hire a blogger who "gets" ...
... you and who will post daily. The great thing is, the perfect blogger could live halfway around the world, and nobody has to know.

Half the battle of setting yourself apart from competitors is having passion about your product or service. Almost all the rest of the battle is the plain hard work of suiting up and showing up every day to do the right stuff. Good luck!
