Laser Hair Removal - After Care
It is very important with any kind of treatment to take good care of the treated body area for some time after the treatment, and the same applies to laser hair removal. We will see a few tips on the same in a bit, but let’s quickly get a fair idea on the number of sittings required in order to see some good, long-term results with laser hair removal treatments.
The number of treatments required for laser hair removal depends on the size of the area to be treated. If all you need treated is parts of your face, then very few sittings (usually 2-3) are required compared to removing hair from your back, arms, or legs (which could require anywhere from 4-6 sittings and more). The amount of time spent per sitting will vary also. In fact, there’s research to prove that a single sitting is not sufficient (and a quick money-saving tip for you): It has to do with hair cycle. Your body hair cycles around three phases †anagen (active) phase, catagen (resting) phase and telogen (no pigmentation) phase. Your body hair can undergo effective laser hair removal treatment only during the anagen ...
... phase. That’s because your hair grows during this phase and is darker, which is when the laser can be effective.
When you’re talking to a specialist at a laser hair removal clinic, please keep this in mind to see if they use these words. If they do and suggest you to come back during the anagen phase of your body hair cycle (and they will know when that phase will be active) for treatment, you’re in safe hands. If they just treat you without informing you of this, you’re probably being scammed for more money. A total of 6-8 sittings is usually required to treat most areas of the body with a gap of 4-6 weeks.
After Care:
Sometimes, laser hair removal treatments can cause light, temporary side effects such as redness of the treated area/skin or mild swelling. This could last anywhere between a couple of hours post treatment and a week, and different people experience different reactions. If you experience any discomfort, please ask your laser hair removal practitioner to help you cool it off. These side effects are not harmful though.
However, in order to avoid complications or potential skin problems in the future, taking care of the skin is very essential. Here are a few tips you might want to note down before beginning laser hair removal:
· Apply Sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) after the surgery to prevent direct contact of sunlight on the skin
· Better yet, avoid exposure of your skin to Sunlight
· No sun-tanning, until your treatment practitioner says so
· Avoid bleaching until a few weeks after the treatment
· If you don’t see results right away, don’t try some other hair removal option. Talk to your laser hair removal practitioner first
· Absolutely no picking or scratching the skin. It will only worsen the swelling and redness
· After taking bath, dry your skin by gently patting a soft towel on it, and avoid rubbing
· Don’t apply deodorant until after 24 hours (of treatment) on the treated skin area
· Use a moisturizer in between treatments to help combat dryness
· At anytime if in doubt, please contact your practitioner. Only s/he knows your case best and hence, is in the best position to help you
One last tip: After the treatment, you might experience hair shedding; this is not re-growth of hair. It’s a normal occurrence after the treatment. It’s just the dead hair falling off. Perhaps, your treatment has been successful.
