New Controversy Lined Up With Dwivedi’s Statements
At this time when quota is one of the most used hyper sensitive words in our nation, a new controversy sprung up when senior Congress leader Janardan Dwivedi came up with his view to end the reservation on the caste system. He in his interview to the press, requested Rahul Gandhi to diminish the caste system and instead introduce the quota for the financially weaker sections of the society.
Dwivedi laid stress on his comment and said that the established formula never helps a needy and thus such systems should be demolished. He also said that he want the new United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to be a fresh one that will have some better prospects and will have some policies that will be future oriented and will take the country towards a new height.
Soon after the interview to the news agency, it created a lot of embarrassment for the party and its officials. Dwivedi’s raised many eyebrows at this moment when his party is working on the minority sub quota and also working in favour of supporting reservation for SCs and the STs. The ...
... idea and the statements from the senior leader of the grand old party fetched in lot of criticism from the other opposition parties. BJP came up yelling this comment of Dwivedi as anti-government and called this situation as a trial balloon. Rajya Sabha on Wednesday witnessed uproar with various fierce comments from the other parties as well. BJP’s deputy leader Ravi Shankar Prasad stated that Congress attempted to start a new debate in the country with such comments and increase tension among the citizens. Leading lady of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Mayawati also arrived in with her demand from the Congress party to take up clear stand on the issue. She commented that the statement on reservation cannot be an individual’s opinion, but the party is also standing beside him.
Few hours later, Congress party head Sonia Gandhi came up with a two page statement on the newly emerged controversy generated through Dwivedi. She rejected the suggestion for ending the quota based on caste saying that “Congress is of the firm opinion that the system of reservations for SCs/ STs/ OBCs must continue. This is essential to deal with the discrimination imposed by centuries of subjugation and oppression.” She added that Congress was the first one to introduce reservation long time back in 1950s and for the OBCs in the mid-1990s. She reminded that Congress party has initiated a dialogue to provide reservations for the economically weaker sections of the society as noted down in the 2009 manifesto of the party. Other senior party leaders also came up to defend their party member on this issue. Union Minister, Jairam Ramesh said that the statement given by Dwivedi is his personal opinion and it is not the opinion of the party and nor of the party leadership.
Later after Sonia Gandhi’s balancing statement, BJP came up calling Congress party a confused party which is in a confused state and also in a perpetual dilemma.
