Zithromax Is Use To Reduce The Development Of Drug-resistant Bacteria
Zithromax tablets, 250 mg, 500 mg. To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of ZITHROMAX (azithromycin) and other bacterial drugs, ZITHROMAX (azithromycin) should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria.
HOW TO USE:
Take this medication by mouth with or without food, usually once a day, or as directed by your doctor. You may take this medication with food if stomach upset occurs. Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at the same time each day. Continue to take this medication until the full prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection. Antacids may decrease the absorption of azithromycin. If you take an antacid, wait at least 2 hours after taking this medication. Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
Contraindications:
Azithromycin should ...
... not be used in patients with pneumonia who are judged to be inappropriate for oral therapy because of moderate to severe illness or risk factors such as any of the following:
Patients with cystic fibrosis,
patients with nosocomially acquired infections,
patients with known or suspected bacteremia,
patients requiring hospitalization,
elderly or debilitated patients, or
patients with significant underlying health problems that may compromise their ability to respond to their illness (including immunodeficiency or functional asplenia).
Warnings/Precautions:
Pneumonia: oral treatment is for mild, community-acquired cases suitable for outpatient therapy only. Discontinue if signs/symptoms of hepatitis occur. Hepatic or renal impairment. Known QT prolongation, proarrhythmic conditions, clinically significant bradycardia: avoid. Myasthenia gravis. Hepatic or renal impairment. Hypersensitivity reactions may recur after initial successful symptomatic treatment. Elderly Pregnancy (Cat.B). Nursing mothers.
Interactions:
Avoid concomitant aluminum- or magnesium-containing antacids. Monitor digoxin, cyclosporine, ergots, triazolam, hexobarbital, phenytoin, warfarin. Monitor for azithromycin toxicity (eg, liver dysfunction, ototoxicity) with nelfinavir. Concomitant Class 1A (eg, quinidine, procainamide), or Class III (eg, dofetilide, amiodarone, sotalol) antiarrhythmics, or others known to prolong the QT interval: avoid.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Stomach upset, diarrhea/loose stools, nausea, vomiting, or stomach/abdominal pain may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: hearing loss, eye problems (e.g., drooping eyelids, blurred vision), slurred speech, muscle weakness. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these rare but serious side effects occur: dark urine, persistent nausea/vomiting, severe stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing of the eyes or skin. Seek immediate medical attention if any of these rare but serious side effects occur: severe dizziness, fainting, fast/irregular heartbeat. This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea) due to a type of resistant bacteria.
Storage:
Store at room temperature. Protect from heat, light and moisture. Keep away from reach of children.
