Structured cabling done with fibre optic can prove to be more durable while joining networks in campuses and buildings as utmost care needs to be taken for its proper connection and seamless flow of data through it. Fibre optics has huge advantages over other such connections and is also cost-effective.

Due to recent changes in hardware, copper wiring systems are being upgraded with the recently introduced fibre optics system. Not only is it easier to install and cost effective, it is much more efficient than copper wiring in terms of attenuation and data loss. Increasing number of institutions, companies and organization has pushed the need for better networking solutions. Systems in such places are rarely standalone. They are usually connected to a network that allows sharing and communication of data between other connected systems. Interconnection of these systems leads to a network which is known as data cabling. The general method of achieving this was by using twisted copper cables throughout the network. However, this is being ...
... replaced by fibre optics due to a number of reasons.
The advantages of fibre optics over copper wiring in data cabling:

Fibre optics offers a far greater bandwidth for data transmission along with preventing intrusion from other users. It is highly secure and reliable and can transport data over greater distances with very less attenuation.
Fibre optics is not subject to changes in the environment unlike their predecessor, copper wires. They are more immune and offer reliable transmission of data at all times.
Existing networks can be easily upgraded to fibre optics due to the easy availability of media converters.

Networks in campuses and buildings result in the formation of structured cabling that is composed of smaller units or subsystems. Fibre optics are used to achieve this and it is governed by a set of standards and specifications. Generally, to provide simple connection over various physical structures, a central patch panel is used from which connections can be used as and when needed. Structured cabling must offer reliable service and high security to their clients. You must be able to easily transmit data, voice and even run CCTV applications.
Using fibre optics reduces the maintenance cost as it is more durable and effective than using copper wiring systems. Proper planning must be done while designing the cabling system. It must provide efficient integration of data, audio, video and also be secure at the same time. The cables must be designed and laid out in such as way that it offers highest resistance against fire, waters and other elements that may damage it.
It is clear that fibre optics provide many added advantages over copper wiring in terms of reduction in cost, ease of installation and efficient data transmission. However, fibre optic termination is more difficult. They must be done properly in order to prevent any damage in the cables and allow for seamless transmission of data through it.
Fibre optic termination can be done by:

Using connectors that can connect to fibres and create a temporary joint between them and connecting them to a network gear if possible.
Splicing them that creates a permanent joint between them

No matter how it is done, high detail and attention has to be paid out fibre optic termination. If not done properly, it can lead to signal loss and corruption. The termination must also be done in such as way that it protects the joints from physical elements such as dust, air, etc. The equipment used such as connectors and other tools must be kept clean and free from dust. Only tried and tested connectors must be used as experimenting when setting up the connections can lead to unmanageable problems in the long run.
