Tie-N-Dye is a method, wherein the base fabric is first tied at several points by threads and then the threads are dyed. The manner in which the tying is done decides the resulting pattern, which could generally be white or light coloured dots, stripes, waves or squares on dark coloured fabrics. Bandhani, Bandhni or Bandhej is a highly-skilled process involving Tie-Dye method that achieves brilliant artistic designs on fabrics. It is a highly skilled art traditionally practised in Gujarat and Rajasthan. Works like, tying of thousands of miniscule knots on the fabric, which spread and form exquisite designs on opening after the dyeing process, speak volumes of the skill involved. Designs and colours differ, with significance attached to certain colours. Generally dark shades of bright colours like red, yellow, green are preferred so that the patterns could be highlighted.
