As the population continues to grow, the numbers of criminals seem to be increasing beyond proportional percentages. The fact that many countries and neighborhoods are victim to poverty makes crime an alluring alternative. As the condition becomes worse, you may need to be more observant than before.

Many years ago, parents demanded to know everything about a child's new friend. They wanted to know where he or she lived, who their parents were, and what the telephone number was. Parents used to be very picky about who their children were allowed to associate with.

Unfortunately, in today's society, there are more channels of communication open to use and abuse, so it becomes much more difficult to control your child's movements. Drug dealers and others you do not approve of have found their way into schools, posing threats that have become difficult to control.

In addition to that, the fact that most schools are quite huge compared to the average school's size fifty years ago. The sheer numbers of people make it a lot easier to distinguish serious students from those with a criminal agenda. To top it all, ...
... some teachers are, in isolated cases, subjected to intimidation by these elements.

Since your children cannot be effectively "controlled" or "steered" any more, the only defense you have left is to monitor them, and watch for warning signs. Try to be involved in their lives as much as possible, and be seen as a friend rather than a parent.

Lastly, monitor the origin of their phone calls. Some people may consider it an invasion of privacy, but in reality you will simply be taking care of your child's safety. Having the advantage of more life experience, you are likely to see possible danger when your child would not.

As a parent, you have a responsibility towards your child. Although executing this responsibility may sometimes be met with resistance, it is still your duty. Keep in mind that this resistance comes from someone who is not yet equipped to deal with life. You may have grown up in a time when things were different, but you have also learned more as time progressed.
