The pressure on the teeth caused by this teeth grinding is extremely high, and it has many possible negative effects. Some of which can actually be diagnosed as occlusal disease. It is a para functional habit that often occurs during sleep. Patients will unknowingly grind their teeth with tremendous force. Clenching refers to teeth being held together in a strong, forced bite for no functional purpose. Patients can have teeth that are so cold sensitive they have to use warm water to brush their teeth, or they must avoid cold foods and beverages. A rising concern in the field of dentistry is the epidemic of teeth clenching and grinding. Most people do it subconsciously while they are concentrating. In younger children it often stops by the time the second set of teeth appear. In adults, bruxism is more prevalent in athletes, military tank drivers, compulsive over-achievers and those involved in very meticulous work. Teeth are most likely to suffer the brunt of bruxing. Anything from chipped teeth, loosening of fillings, crowns and damage to cosmetic dentistry work can be the result, often costing lots of time and money at ...
