Common Roofing Supplies For Long Island Roofers
Common Roofing Supplies for Long Island Roofers
Roofing is serious business in New York; in fact, the state currently has one of the highest number of roofers in the country since 2012, at least according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This means that there is a steady market for roofing supplies in Long Island, whether or not they come from famous roofing brands. Some of Long Island’s roofers typically have the following items on their purchase lists:
Roofing Shingles/Tiles
These are what people think of first whenever the word “roof” comes to mind. Of course, roofers wouldn’t want to settle for low-grade shingles and tiles and as such take time to inspect each product label, particularly information pertaining to the product’s durability and fire resistance. Renowned roofing brands such as GAF also offer warranties for their products, which is also something most roofers expect to see.
Roofing Underlayment
This thin, protective layer of felt or tar paper is the roof’s second line of defense against water infiltration, next only to the roof covering itself. Since underlayment ...
... is installed beneath a roofing system, it is not as prone to physical damage as shingles and tiles. However, this component is particularly vulnerable to moisture since water tends to seep into the gaps and crevices that form on roofing materials. As such, the roofing underlayment should be very durable against water infiltration and damage.
Roof Flashings
A roof that incorporates certain exterior features like chimneys and dormer windows is often built with flashings that connect these components to the entire roofing system. Flashings are basically thin pieces of metal or plastic that are designed to seal any gaps and empty spaces between the roof and the aforementioned exterior features. Like the underlayment, roof flashings should also be resistant to water damage.
Roof Gutters
While gutters are typically sold and installed separately, rain gutters often form part of the entire roofing system and are, therefore, considered essential Long Island roofing supplies. Among other things, rain gutters should be able to drain rainwater from the roof as quickly as possible, primarily to prevent water infiltration but also to reduce the likelihood of collapse resulting from the weight of accumulated water.
