If your HP Pavilion Laptop is not booting up and its black screen is giving you no clue about the underlying problem, then this article can help you get rid of the problem. When you receive the error message on your screen, you at least get some idea about what is wrong with your laptop. But when you power up your laptop and see that the LED is glowing (means your computer is getting power) and you hear the fan is spinning yet nothing appears on the screen, then you find yourself entirely clueless. There can be many reasons for the black screen problem during laptop start up.

Troubleshooting Black Screen of HP Pavilion laptop

When you find black screen issue on your laptop, first you need to perform a hard reset, which can be done in the manner indicated below:

First make your laptop free from all the attached peripheral devices, USB devices and media cards. Disconnect all the hardware and other accessories connected to your laptop.

Now remove the battery of your laptop and disconnect the AC power adapter, then press the power button and hold it for at least 15 seconds.

After this, reconnect ...
... the AC power adapter but keep the battery detached. In this mode press the Power button again.

After performing this hard test, two conditions are possible:

Operating laptop: Under the first condition, you will see the LEDs near Caps lock and Num lock keys are glowing and you will hear the sounds of fan running inside the laptop, which means your laptop is operating.

Non operating Laptop: Under the second condition, you won’t see any LED glowing and won’t hear sounds of drivers or fans spinning, means your laptop is not operating.

Operating laptop: Connect the Laptop to External Monitors

In the first condition, you can fix the issue by connecting the laptop to an external monitor.

If LEDs are glowing and you can hear sounds of fans, spinning drives, beep tones, etc that means the laptop is operating. Probably the graphic driver of your HP pavilion laptop has got corrupted or there is some problem with the display’s backlight. To check and fix this issue, perform the following steps:

Get an external monitor and connect it to your laptop. Now, if the problem is just with the graphic card of your laptop and there is no motherboard issue, then in this external monitor the display of your laptop will appear.

If the display of your laptop is working in the external computer, then with the external monitor connected, download the latest drivers from the HP website and install on your HP Pavilion model and graphic chip set.

After installing the latest graphic drives, turn off the monitor and disconnect it from the laptop. Now boot up your laptop, the issue is likely to get resolved.

But even now if the laptop is indicating that it is operating but you can’t get the display then you can call for online technical support.

Non operating Laptop

If you are not able to hear any sound and LED is also not glowing then probably your laptop is not functioning at all. Probably its motherboard has got corrupted, or it has issues related to RAM or others.

Follow the below mentioned tips to fix such issues with your HP laptop:

Test the memory Modules

To test the memory modules, perform the steps below:

Disconnect the AC adapter and battery from your laptop. Now remove all the memory modules from your computer. Then insert the first memory module in the first memory slot.

Now, connect the AC adapter but keep the battery disconnected and turn on the laptop. If the computer boots up normally, that means the first memory module is functioning properly.

Again disconnect the AC adapter and remove the module. Now again connect the adapter and insert the second memory module to perform the same test.

If you find the second module faulty you need to replace it.

But, if on inserting the second module also you find the laptop is booting up normally (means you hear the fan and drive spinning sound and see the LEDs glowing) and yet the black screen is appearing that means the memory modules are fine but there can be problem with memory slots.

Test the memory slots

In the aforementioned steps, you had performed the memory module test on the first memory slot of the laptop. The steps confirmed that the memory modules are operating fine, so the issue can be with the memory slot. To confirm this, perform the same steps but this time insert the memory modules one- by-one in the second memory slot of your laptop.

If you get the black screen issue resolved while inserting the memory modules in the second slot then it means that the first slot was having problem. So you must replace the memory compartment cover of the first slot.

But if with the second slot also, the black screen issue prevails, then there are chances that both the slots are fine, and you are having some problem with the hard drive of your laptop.

Test the hard drive

You can test the hard drive of your laptop using the HP Hard Drive Self Test. For which you need to perform the following steps:

Connect the AC Adapter with the laptop and turn it off for 5 seconds.

Now, press the Power button to boot up the computer and then continue pressing the ‘F10’ key repeatedly to enter the BIOS Setup Menu.

Using the Left Arrow or Right Arrow keys, you can navigate through the menu.

Look for the Primary Hard Drive Self Test option, which is likely to be located either below the Diagnostics or Tools segment in a HP Pavilion laptop.

Once found, select the Primary Hard Drive Self Test and next press the Enter key to initiate the test.

The Hard Drive Self Test will start performing the Quick Test first and then the Comprehensive Test.

If there is any hard drive issue, the test will detect and flash it on the BIOS screen. You can contact HP service center to get your hard drive replaced.

If the test shows that there is no hard drive damage, then you need to contact technical support personnel, as there is nothing more that you can do by yourself.

However, most likely you won’t require contacting your tech guy, because by performing the aforementioned steps, you would most likely be able to detect the root cause of black screen issue in your HP pavilion laptop. Moreover, the article explains how to resolve the issue in a few simple step. The process can be bit time consuming but effective in fixing black screen problems of HP laptops.
